Anyone in the US got the new Sony MiniDV TRV-19 (or similar)?
It's due in the UK in about a fortnight and I'm thinking of buying one.
I'd be grateful for any opinion.
    Thanks,
    Will

  2. So, Silky - we meet again!

Actually, I bought the Sony MiniDV TRV-17 about a year ago. The quality is excellent and so is the ease of use. I have no complaints except the still picture quality is lacking, but the TRV-19 might be a better resolution.

Also, I believe the TRV-19 is smaller since they are making them smaller than last year's model. The one I have is pretty small in itself. Mine also has the 3.5" screen which I love - not sure about the TRV-19 model.

If you do get this, invest in the clear lens filter - it doesn't affect the picture, but it will save your lens from being scratched. I leave it on all the time and the lens cap still fits nicely over it.

Hmm, your username sounds familiar, are you the gay basher?
    Only joking, only joking
Typical Brits, the last to get any decent technology!
The new TR19 only has a 2.5" screen and I've read a US review which didn't rate the video quality very highly.
I'm desperate to get one, although not at the expense of lacklustre quality.
Did you know the TRV14 AND TRV19 are exactly the same model over here, only the TR19 in dv-in enabled and the 14 not?
This is because the EU charges us more for a dv-in enabled camcorder!!!!!!!
    Can you believe that!
    Thanks for the post

  5. it's too bad anyone get charged extra for DV-In - that's occuring here also on televisions though. I'm not sure why - it's just an input. You'd think it costs more to put out two products with only one difference.

In any case, quality is a matter of perspective - what's good enough for you may not be for someone else. I'd suggest doing a search on google and get all the info you can. Then, going to the store to try one out. A good electronics shop should let you record, then hook it up to a television to see results. (make sure its an HDTV though since you are looking at a higher resolution recording).

This was my view when I bought mine: most stores give you a 14 or 30-day full-refund return policy, no questions asked, no restocking fee. Get the one you want, and if you don't like the quality, return it for another model.

  6. I just bought a TRV-22 in the US, which is in the same line but one step up from the 19. I am very pleased with it so far. The reason I went with the 22 over the 19 is that the 19 doesn't have A/V input with pass-thru. I needed that to bring in old analog sources and convert them to digital.

There is some good info on them in the forum on http://www.camcorderinfo.com

I actually went for the TRV-14, I bought it Saturday.
I guess it's the TRV-19 over in the US, insofar as it doesn't have AV in or analogue passthrough which, after much thought, I decided I didn't really need and was just being extravagant!
So far I've pretty pleased with it, although I haven't done much recording, only 20 minutes so far.
