  1. I have never tried to rip an episodic dvd, xfiles, sopranos, simpsons for ex., so I have no idea how to do so, and make it fit onto 1 disc. Any ideas?

Also, I recently ripped a dvd that had it's movie split into to seperate vob groups, while authoring i burnt them as two seperate movies and added menu navigation, is there any program that will allow you to rip the original menu images or movies, so that you may keep them intact?

    thanks

DVD decrypter and Instant copy works with the ones I've done. Some of them are more difficult to copy.

The biggest problem here (on all these) is their size. They have more or less 3 hours of video (4 x 45min). Some even more (e.g. X-Files). They also (typically) have multiple soundtracks, some at bitrates of 448kbps, which is huge when you want to compress.

Some encoding programs will not re-encode sound (e.g. DVD2One). And as these DVDs have typical sizes between 7.5~8.5Gb, it's asking too much to fit into a single disk.

The only reasonable way to do this is to remove extra soundtracks (and subtitles is also nice, although they don't take too much space). I also remove extras. This allows a single episode to be like 1Gb and each soundtrack 139Mb. It fits onto a DVDR nicely and the video has an acceptable bitrate. All is authored from scratch using the original soundtrack, the re-encoded video and one or two subtitles. I make a menu using a grabbed background.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
