I use TMPGEnc to encode PAL DV video, 720 x 576, to SVCD. TMPGEnc detects the "Source aspect ratio" to 4:3 704 x 576. Which "Video arrange Method" should I use? "Full screen" or "Full screen (keep aspect ratio)", since the aspect ratio of the actual source is slightly different from what TMPGEnc assumes.

I've used both settings, but I don't see much difference.

My guess is that you should use Full screen (keep aspect ratio) for the best result.

I think the default setting is 4:3. Just change it to match your input aspect ratio. The setting for your output depends on what you want TMPGenc to do. Center - Keep Aspect Ratio, will tell it to retain your input video's aspect ratio, no matter what. It will reduce the size, and add letterboxing to both the top, bottom, and sides if necessary to retain that aspect ratio.

Short answer, pick Center - Keep Aspect ratio. It will most likely yield what your looking for, as long as your input looks 'right' to begin with. If you want all of the gory details, look no further:

The 704 means 704 or 720 so far I can tell. It's only what, 2% difference so the slight alteration in size isn't noticable.

However if you're converting full screen DV to full screen SVCD of the same standard, only your horizontal size is changing, it's exactly the same height, so you're best to select Full Screen. The height won't be touched (well.. it'll be resized to exactly the same size ), and the horizontal size will be squashed down the proper amount (source size, in this case 720, to output size, in this case 480, without taking any other factors into account). It'll work just fine.

If you're really paranoid you can set it to Center, 480x576 size..
