Has anyone here ever downloaded DVD's from the internet? I have seen DVD images or files, but don't know how good they are. Anyone have experience in this?

  2. Such things are also mentioned as warez...
I think you should avoid discussing such things here.

Yeah, don't discuss here. Not legal...

Anyway, I cannot imagine grabbing a 4gig+ size file. No way. You probably saw something Divx or bogus.

  4. Sorry i couldn't resist.....

I actually have downloaded some DVDR images. I own about 150-160 Original DVD's and wanted to see the difference between an original and a copy made by "the scene".

I was quite amazed by the quality a dvdr can hold and still keep some of the extras.

For me it's not a problem to download 4.37Gb. It takes about 4-6 hours.

Just a note... I dislike programs like KaZaa or Morpheus because you never can tell what quality a movie is. There are a lot of be-the-first-to-release-a-new-movie-nomatter-what-the-quality-dvd's out there. This is not what i was looking for. Just wanted to see what quality was possible for backup purposes.

Legal or not, there are full DVD-r images available on the net if you know where to look, though I doubt you will find many on the P2P services yet.

Full DVDR image or 4 SVCD images, what's the difference? (besides 1.1 GB)

Higher quality in most cases (higher bitrates than SVCD and higher resolution)

Most are DVD rips made using things IC7 or DVD2ONE. Many involve just extracting the movie and throwing away extra's and unwanted soundtracks, just like many on this forum do to get the movie only onto 1 DVD-r. Any transcoding done is often minimal, thus the reasonably high quality.

  9. Yeah, don't post about warez or pirating here. Noone here does that sort of thing. We just do legit backups with software we paid for.
