  1. I'm sure someone has asked this before, but it might be nice to get an update. In terms of dvd-r what brands have worked out the best for you, and where can you get them?

The Apple brand hasn't given me any trouble yet, but is very expensive. I have also had good luck with Maxell, but alas, it is also very expensive. On the other hand, I tried this Samsung brand called "BeAll" and while cheaper, the quality is very uneven. I have yet to see BeAll work on my PS2 back-ups, and I've had the same back-up on different disc respond differently - go figure. I haven't settled on a dealer yet, perhaps you all could give us some of your experiences.

Again, this is specific to the DVR-104 Pioneer - the so-called Superdrive.

Here at work we burn Maxell. They aren't too bad on price and seem to work just fine.

Apple 2x DVD-R through the education store is $2.82 per disc. Thats less than a quality blank videocassette. For the convenience of fast burning and the widespread compatibility of the discs, I'd say thats a good price point.

For my superdrive, I use "no name" white-topped DVDs from www.americal.com.

Lot number 702886 DVD-Rs were about $.85 per at lots of 50 and DVD-RWs, number 702837, were about $42 for 25.

These work fine in my Sony 315.

  5. I use 'mirror' dvd-rs, which I get purely cos they are 50p each at my local shop *including* a proper dvd case. Only problem is that they don't work in PS2s (they work in Xbox's) and toast will only recognise them as 1x even though they are branded as 2x

  6. Yeah, PS2's are a tricky lot when it comes to dvd-r media.

Went to staples the other day and tried using the memorex three packs they've had on sale - terrible, terrible - wouldn't even complete the writing process, two discs in a row errored during burn. So much crap I took them back and got a refund to get more maxells.

What the best price you all have seen for the maxells?

Riteck 4X blanks work great for A05 drives, no coasters after 100 of them....

  8. Any suggestions for reliable yet cheap media that will burn at 2X in a stock DVR-104 superdrive? I've had good 1X burns with several generic/off-brands, but I'm not sure that I'm interested in messing with success by hacking the drive's firmware to try for 2X...
