  2. well depending on which format i am using decides that for me. if im gonna use mpeg1/2 i will burn it to watch on standalone player.

if i am encoding to divx/xvid.avi format which i normally do. i out it to tv using a tview gold scan converter and it looks very nice on my 27" and 35" tvs.

    so mpeg / standalone
    divx / out to tv

just the way i do things no real right or wrong way.

that will be totally up to you. if you think the quality is good and you can watch it with no probs. then who is to say that the encode is bad or ugly. what i concider bad quality, someone else may concider it to be a flawless encode. i tend to be a critic when it comes to noise or artifacts in encodes and set my standards to high in some cases. its funny sometimes i swear i can even pick out noisey frames in the original dvds. :P

It depends on what U want!?!

First TV-out would be the easiest choice, 'cause U don't have to spend hours and hours to encode DivX to MPEG1/2, author the movie and burn it on DVD.
Second a DivX movie fits perfectly on only 1 or 2 normal CD's which are cheaper than for instance DVD media...
There is only 1 but... (It depends on the videocard you are using...) Many graphics card display the computer screen in Underscan-mode. This means that you see the computer screen with black bands surrounding it on your TV!!! (these are call Raw Bands). There are some tools (e.g. TVTOOL or TVCC2000 (www.tvtool.de)) to overcome this problem. These tools change settings of your videocard so that the computer screen is displayed in overscan-mode...

I can't speak for the ATI 9000, but on the GForce 4 card I have in one of my PCs, the quality of the TV-Out is not that good; it certainly isn't as good as a standalone DVD player.

There is some blurring and ghosting, but since it's only for the kids, I'm not too bothered

It is possible that it's down to the cable, because it's a 20m cable from the PC to the TV

What kind of cable is it???

Are you connecting your pc to tv with a scart cable??? This is probably the reason that you have ghosting and weird side effects!!!
In my case, I have placed an old Videorecorder next to my pc to modulate the video and (stereo) audio signals into RF signal... This signal is transported over a standard antenna cable downstairs to my television set. The antenna cable goes into a splitter which combines the cable television signals and computer screen signal together so I don't have to switch cables all the time...
I just have to tune in the tv set between channel 30-40 (depends on how the videorecorder is set up) and et voila!!!!!! A perfect picture!!!
This is also KEWL, 'cause I use my pc to decode scrambled television channels like SKY and Premiere.

It is an S-Video -> SCART cable. I did consider doing something similar to what you suggested, but the video I have doesn't generate stereo onto the RF so I thought I'd be better with this cable. As it turned out, I got better audio and probably lower quality video.

But like I said, the kids still watch it

I just bought a new video card with tv-out and I use S-Video cable but I'm not to satisfied with the picture quality so I prefer encoding. Can u give more detailed step-by-step instruction on what you are doing, and also all the parts required, because I want to try it out.

    Thanks
