  1. Looking through different threads and forums its hard to distinguish what drives are capable of what when it comes to ripping because many do not list specific models if they are having success. Since I am in the market for a drive I thought maybe I could enlist the help of the fine members here to see what experience people have had with theirs. Here is the info I think would be helpful.

    Manufacture
    Model
    Stock Firmware
    Updated Firmware
    $$ at time of purchase?
How fast (low and peak) does it rip?
Or is it Locked at 2X?
Do you get errors with ripping programs?

    Pioneer 116
Changed firmware to latest release for Region 0
Purchased for ~$150 1.5 years ago, now should be around $50
    Rated for 16x data
    Rips CD-Audio at 15x ~ 17x
Rips Video at ~ 5.3x if it's dual layered, ~8x for single layer
More than 50 rips with Smartripper with no errors and then 5 garbage rips in a row on Stargate episodes. Switched to DVDDecrypter and happy for now.

    SONY DRU500A (recorder)
    Locked at 2x

    BTC (model can't remember)
    Rips at ~ 0.9x
    Don't ever buy a BTC DVD-ROM
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
