why is it that if i attempt to burn an uneditted mpeg2 file and nero checks out the file everything checks out ok. but if i edit the mpeg2 file(say cut it down to 50 min.), then when nero checks the file is says it needs to reencode it. so when i click reencode it says i have to buy their mpeg2 plugin. yet i can go straight to burn cd option with an uncut mpeg2 file??
do you follow me?

the edited mpeg file must have some sort of coding

i do all my mpeg file editting with tmpgenc. i don't believe virtual dub accepts avi files does it?

If You edit SVCD compliant MPEG2 file in TMPGenc make sure You select "MPEG2 Super Video CD" under "Type" not "MPEG2 program"
