  1. Firstly, yes, I am happy with this capture solution. Becuase of this site I didn't bother with all the other capture devices that apparently give lots of people problems.

The problem is when I capture off-air or VHS to .AVI (6+ GB per hour), the reult is a great capture. But, on closer inspection there is a slight kind of "line" or "cross-hatch" effect in the .AVI. To the "unwashed masses" it would be fine, but to me it makes the video look amateurish.

Do all the other ADVC-100 users get this effect in their captures?

If I capture with some bigger (30+ GB per hour) format will these slight lines go away?

Thanks for your help - Thank goodness for this forum!!

Not sure what the lines are you're seeing (maybe the interlace lines?) but if you're using the ADVC-100 you should be capturing to DV AVI at about 12GB per hour, if you're getting anything other than about 12GB per hour then your capture software must be converting to another format and that's likely your problem. Also, use a good set of cables to connect the source to the ADVC.

It sound like the cable fromyour VCR to the computer is picking up artifacts "RF MODULATION" or herringboning on the way
please keep the cable short and fat (shielded)

  4. Thanks for responding so quickly - yes, they may be the interlace lines but they are most noticeable with moving subject matter. I'm converting a britcom and the lines are noticeable "around" a person when they are walking from one side of the room to the other. The stationary objects in the room look like the source material it's just the moving person is kind of "liney."

    Thanks again.

If you capture at full size (720X576) you should be getting around 12~13Gb per hour as Bondiablo said. You may be capturing at 352x288 which could make the interlace effect look worse. Ive gotten used to the jagged interlace picture when viewing the avi, but once it is encoded to dvd mpeg all is fine.

  6. Isn't this forum awesome?!?

Sounds like I don't have much to worry about, thank goodness.

Use short, high-quality cabling? Will do.
Encode with TMPEnc and then check the results? I'm on it.

    Thanks folks!

    I'm glad you didn't say LIMEY :-)

Liney, well, that does sound like interlace lines which are only visible on a computer monitor (HI-RES and all) a TELEVISON will not display those artifacts

  8. LMAO @ dcsos! No, no, no "Limey" is not in my vocabulary, amigo. Thanks for your (and everybody's) inputs.
