  1. hello all.

I have some older tv shows and movies recorded on vhs, that I would like to capture and burn onto vcd using my pc, a Happuage usb-live capture device. This device has video inputs for both composite and svhs, with usb hookup for the computer input. i'd like to do captures using the svhs input but do not have a svhs vcr. I was planning on buying a newer vcr and was wondering whether buying an svhs deck would improve the picture coming from my older vhs tapes? I have my eyes set on a JVC HR-S2911 (any thoughts on this unit or where I can read discussions about it)?

Also, I'd like to tranfer my vhs letterbox version of the star wars trilogy (original version) to vcd but I'm worried about macrovision. Is macrovision transmitted thru svhs connections or only thru composite? in this case, would macrovision be sent from the jvc svhs unit to my happuage device? what about if I were recording onto svhs? Would hooking up my dvd player to the jvc svhs deck and attempting to record a dvd eliminate macrovision from being passed?

To summarize, would buying a svhs deck improve the picture quality of older or even new vhs recordings? Is macrovision passed on thru svhs cables or only thru composite?

    Any input would be welcome.

    Thanks.

  2. My experience with the same thing says: I have always got the best VHS play back on the VCR/Camcorder that recorded the original.

As for the macrovision: Its tricky, all I can say is you have to try. I have had success and failure.

You will know right away though, so dont waste your time (or HDD) recording the whole movie. Just a few minutes, then check: If it works, then go for it
