I am burning DVDs of home movies, etc. I want to be able to send to others in family.
I already know getting the right -r vs. +r, and UDF1.02 vs. 1.05, and what program used, etc, are issues. (Whewh!!!)
But, assuming that I am successfully burning a DVD at 1X and playing on 2 different systems, if all else is the same except burning on a 2X or 4X speed DVD, should it play on those same systems? (Assuming the burn itself is successful, of course.)

Best for you to ask your family members what player they have and get discs that you KNOW will play on their players by checking the players list to the left. <-----
That way you will save a lot of time and effort when burning disks. I've only had my burner a couple weeks and I already have to be careful what disks I burn for friends. Some disks will work in one player but not in another. Some will play in the burner and one or two other decks but not in any others. It's a toss-up at this point... -
I think -r's are more compatabile.
Play on stadalones, ps2 and xbox.

I suspect need to look again, but I haven't noticed what disks do play on players by speed, only brand.
I have already noticed that -R seems to be the most supported, and so that is what I am using. But, I wanted to move up to a higher speed 2X or 4X.
From what I see so far, it's a crap shoot.
By the way, from what I read, it's not only what disks, but what format you burn them with (as noted in my original post), and what program you burn them with.
With all these variables, it's amazing we get anything to work.
As a note, everything I've burned so far works on my equipment (Apex AD-703) but not on my friends or daughter's players (one is Sony, the other Panasonic). I just did some reading on the Panasonic, and saw one post that said Record Now worked, and another that said to use UDF 1.5 instead of 1.02. So, I am mailing 2 DVDs to her to test on: one burned each way.
Argh!Thanks

My DVD-Rs (Ritek, Verbatim and Pioneer) do not play in my PS2 (version 1) and did not in my Apex AD-600 until I did the firmware upgrade. They don't play at all in my friend's Sony DVP-360 (only DVD-RW and CD-RW). The Apex AD-1500 plays some discs and not others. I also have a Matsushita 8583 DVD-ROM drive that can play DVD-RAM as well as pressed DVDs but won't play DVD-RW. Like I said, it's still a big crap shoot when it comes to playback... -
Sorry boys it more then just -r vs +r, and UDF1.02 vs 1.05 etc vs etc Audio it the other key factor to everything so you have 3 audio chosse LPCM, MPEG, DD 2.0 (AC3) we know DD (AC3) is most compatible but cost arm&leg to get in fact it $200 all by it self and it only found in higher end DVD Authoring Software package that cost a round $500 or more.
Thing you need to know if the Home player can't play MP3 then you may as well forget MPEG audio but if it dose try change Audio mode on DVD player some for LPCM.
I have Elcleap Apex AD-500WM hehe works just fine with everthing I thought at it.
One other thing there 2 type firmware one of them not going to help much but the dvd drive firmware will after it just like computer dvd drive. -
I think it is the later versions of the ps2 which will play dvd -r.
I burn all most of my movies using the DVD Video template in Nero.
Record now and Instantcd also play great.
I use Bulkpaq -r, Datawrite -r / +r and While Label Gold -rw.
All of these play on other machines apart from the +r / +rw which only play on my Panasonic LV50.

An article from the July 2002 issue of DV Magazine (www.dv.com) addresses DVD compatibility issues. It is an interesting article by Ralph LaBarge, a pretty well-known figure in DVD production and author of at least one book on the subject. The article includes the following paragraph:
5. If you choose to use off-brand media, record them at the lowest speed possible-1x for DVD-R and DVD-RW, and 2.4x for DVD+RW. Using slower recording speeds increases the overall compatibility rating of off-brand media.
I don't know why, but that's what the man says.

My son's and my sister's players were supposed to play several formats, yet I can burn 2 dvds from THE SAME BOX and one will play, the other not.
I am so totally confused right now, I can't stand it. Short of buying identical dvd players for all of us, I don't know what more to do. I swear I'm doing it the same each time as I use a template in tmpgenc, but something's got to be different. I'm not a technical person, so I guess I'm lucky everything has played for me (and I've burned a LOT since Christmas). I'd welcome any help. Right now I'm back to trying MF2 to author, yet flicks are out of sync. Just makes a person crazy
