  1. Just a very quick question.

My current pc has an amd athlon 2400+xp. Am i correct in thinking this proccesor runs at 2ghz (not 2.4 as you might have guessed). Also, in everall effectivness (i dont wish to discuss fsb etc, just a generalised response), what P4 is this proccesor compairable to.

    Cheers

  2. You are right in thinking that an Athlon XP2400 is not 2.4Ghz, it is in fact 1.93Ghz. This is a marketing ploy by AMD as most PC users guage a PC's performance by clock speed. What AMD have done is give thier processors numbers which are supposed to represent an equal performance to that of the corresponding intel chip.

So for example an XP2400 is supposed to be comparable to a 2.4Ghz P4 although its clock speed is lower at only 1.93Ghz. In many benchtests it has been found that the AMD chip actually performs better than it supposed P4 counterpart.

AMD basically needed to rename their chips, for sales reasons. For example a customer goes into a store and sees a 2.4Ghz P4 and a 2.2Ghz Athlon for the same price. Those customers not in the know would assume that the P4 was the better buy, and more than likely go for the intel option. Whereas the 2.2Ghz athlon would be the better buy as all other things being equal it would outperform the P4.

  3. Hi, thanks for the response.
I was beggining to think my pc was already well and trully outdated, but i think i have just become used to the speed.
One other thing, i am currently running the first edition of win98, as i have been worried about losing the use of some of my older programs if i convert to XP. I can't seem to get my USB2 running on my pc, and have been blaming this on not having a newer O/S. Is this correct, or should i look into it further?

    Cheers

USB2.0 might not work on 98,it does on WinME but it uses alot of resources. I prefer Firewire(ieee1394)never had a problem.
USB2.0 as well as Mt.Rainer are integrated into WinXP.
