Two things I'm not sure on after reading the Sony instructions for updating the firmware on the DRu-500A
1. The instructrions say if I am install the [i]Intel Application Accelerator (Intel Ultra ATA Storage Drive) to uninstall INtel Application Accelerator before executing the update. I'm concerned with this one. I don't know that I am or have installed this, but I do have an ATA 1100 7200 RPM driver installed in my computer. Any relation to this? How can I tell if this is installed?
2. The instructions say to uninstall packet writing software too: I do have DLA, I know to uninstall that. But what about any of these:
Record Now, or Record Now MAX
TSCV
Nero
Ulead DVD Workshop
VCD Easy
DVD Decryptor
DVDx
MyDVD
(As you can t ell, I've been experimenting with different programs.)
Thanks for your suggestions.

hi,
I dont know about uninstalling the Intel Accelrator driver, you shouldn't have to uninstall any programs AS LONG as you prevent them from starting up - e.g. when the computer starts
to stop this go to Start > Run and type msconfig and hit enter.
then navigate to the startup tab and deselect everything.
Now, Right click on My Computer and select Manage
Now go to Device Manager then select IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, from the list select either the Primary or Secondary channel depending on what channel you've installed the Sony Drive on, its probably going to be the secondary.
Then right click on Secondary IDE channel and select Properties then go to Advanced Settings.
If you know the Device Number of the Sony it will be either 0 or 1 - if its Master Secondary then it will be O otherwise it will be 1.
Corresponding to that drive in either Device 0 or Device 1 set the transfer mode to PIO. It must be in PIO mode to update correctly, you can ruin your drive if you dont. P.S if you dont know the device number changed BOTH device transfer modes to PIO.
Then RESTART
THen Update your firmware.

I would advise you read up on the Intel thing i dont know about that -
JOHN
Thanks for you prompt and detailed reply. I had thought about stopping the progs from loading, but then dismissed it. Thanks. That's much better than deinstalling and re-installing a bunch of programs.
I'll try to look a little further on the Intel thing. I have looked around in device manager, etc, and don't think I have it. Maybe someone else will provide another answer on this thread that helps as well.
BTW...I'm planning to move to the 1.0f firmware. Reading around, it seems I see much more positive info about 1.0f, and quite a bit of negative feedback on 1.0g.
ThanksThanks

Well, upon further investigation, the instructions pointed me to a link regarding the Intel Software. I didn't have it installed, but I may check that out next (I love punishment, I guess.)
The upgrade worked fine. One thing appeared to be problematic: after the update, the DLA software said there was not a compatable device. But I just did a repair/reinstall of the software, and all seems fine. Thanks
Roger
