ehh...I heard that you still need to rip it inorder to copy it onto a dvd-r?

Yep! The reason for this is because DVD are encrypted and protected. You need to use a program (such as smart ripper) to copy the dvd and remove the protection (and if it is dual layered, you need to re-encode the movie)

Isn't all the DVD-RW out on the market only support up to 4.7 gig DVD-R? About 80% of dvd movies are over 4.7. again, what's the purpose of a dvd-rw if you can't even copy a striaght copy of a dvd movie?

Maybe you aren't following what these nice people are saying. ANY DVD can be copied somehow, it just takes some effort and time in some cases.

If a film is over 4.7 gig then you cannot do an exact copy. You have to remove all the extras you can do without. If after this the film on its own is still more than 4.7 gig, then you have to reencode it at a lower bitrate to get it to fit on 1 disc.

Well I initially purchased my DVD-RW for doing backups of my data and my DV Footage.
I do not use it to make DVD rips, but to make my own creations.
So there are two reasons at least
