    Can this be done in a standard DVD-ROM, or do you actually need to have a DVD-Burner to do this?

    only need a dvd-rom as you will not be putting anything onto a dvd-r disc. logic should tell you this.

    Treebeard, go easy on the noobs.

    Syndrome, you only need a reader (DVD Rom) to create the Avi's from DVD. You can then play them on your PC, copy them directly to CD, or convert them to video CD for playing on DVD players (some of them anyway).
