My sometimy portable audiovox

I have a portable dvd player (AUDIOVOX DV-1680) and when it comes to playing dvd-rs its always acts like its straing..... i finally tried maxell and they finally played thru whole movies but still with the straining sound, but now its not playing them anymore but still play the apples dvd (cost to much) is there anyway i can tweak my portable to play my dvds better?????
