Programs Needed:
DVDDecrypter or Smartripper (Free) www.doom9.org
DVD95copy Trial (yes only the trial) (Free)
DVD2one 1.0.2 (so you can adjust output size) ($40) (On your own to purchase, please support this wonderful proggy)
IFOupdate (Free) www.doom9.org
IFOedit (Free) www.doom9.org
Nero/Prassi/RecordNow (Various prices) Just do a search
This guide is written to the lowest common denominator LIKE MYSELF who has a limited knowledge of DVD backup. First create 5 folders called A1 through A5 for convenience...but you can name them whatever you wish. In A5 create two subfolders of VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS in all caps.
This process takes HALF the time as running Pinnacle InstantCopy and you have WAY more control over the final output size! I will NOT argue with anyone over the merits of the quality of the main movie. It is MAXIMIZED as much as possible and the menu's and extras MINIMIZED to as small as possible! Pretty Sweet combo~!
1. You want to DVDDecrypt or Smartrip ENTIRE movie to a folder called A1. Before doing this, however, select Edit " Select main movie files" to see what vobs are the MAIN MOVIE. Write this down. Now deselect "Select main movie files" and select "select all". Start this rip process to A1. (Main Movie Dir)
2. Run DVD95copy trial and set INPUT as A1 (Main dir) and OUTPUT as folder A2 (DVD95copy dir) This program LUCKILY just transcodes 10 min of MAIN movie video and MAX compresses
the Menu and extras! It is exactly what you want! Wait for that to finish. ~1.0 hour
3. Delete main movie VOB in A2(D95copy dir) once DVD95copy trial has finished. Read CAREFULLY! Two things to be note here: One, the main movie VOB is the VTS_0X_1.vob can
be identified when you first run DVDdecrypt or SmartRipper by selecting "select main movie files only" and seeing which ones it selects. They may be VTS_01_1.vob through VTS_01_4.vob or they may be VTS_05_1.vob through VTS_05_4.vob or whatever. The main movie does not necessarily have to be the vobs with the "1" in the X column. Two, DO NOT DELETE VTS_0X_0.vob! Leave that alone!
4. Now move MAIN movie files from A1 (MM dir) to A3 (IFOedit dir). This will be files VTS_0X_1.vob through VTS_0X_X.vob Rename them VTS_01_1.vob, VTS_01_2.vob and so on through VTS_01_X.vob until you have renamed them all.
5. Run IFOedit against these files and select VTS_01_1.vob from within IFOedit as the target file. Set destination directory for IFO's same as source. Be sure the "Create a single PGC" and "Create Chapter for Each Cell" are clicked on. Let IFOedit do it's thing depositing sweet new IFO's in with the vob's in A3 (IFOedit dir).
6. Run DVD2one and set the input as A3 (IFOedit dir) and the output as A4 (DVD2one output dir). Set the user defined amount as 4472MB - (size of A2) (DVD95copyDir with the main movie vob file deleted)
7. When DVD2one is complete, rename files in A4 (DVD2one dir) to correspond with the ORIGINAL movies' MAIN movie vob set in A1 (Main dir) that you discovered by the method in step 1 (more experienced users can just see from the size) Example. VTS_05_1.vob through VTS_05_4.vob After rename, move transcoded vobs that you so artfully renamed to A2 (DVD95 dir) DO NOT INCLUDE OR MOVE VTS_01_0.vob that DVD2one produced. Leave that file in A4 all alone.
8. Run IFOUpdate and select A2 (DVD95copy dir) VTS_0X.0.IFO as the original IFO path and DVD2one produced VTS_01_0.IFO in the A4 (DVD2one dir) as the authored patch and C:\backup.bak as the backup path. In the mode drop down menu select “Adjusted cell mode” and in the options menu be sure “Auto Correct VTS sectors” and “Autoanalyze Original IFO” is checked. Now just simply press the button Update IFO!
9. Now re-open IFOEdit for your NEW recompiled project in A2 (DVD95copy dir) and select the new VIDEO_TS.IFO file. Press “Get VTS sectors” and say YES and OK to everything. Close IFOedit.
10. Now you are almost done! Take all those files in A2 (DVD95copy dir) and move them to the subfolder of VIDEO_TS in the A5 (FINAL MOVIE) directory.
11. Burn baby burn! Just use your favorite burning proggy. I use Nero and select DVD UDF/ISO and no multisession and burn it at the 1.02 standard so it's compatible with all players. For more info with that just do a search on Doom9 or vcdhelp or Cdfreaks forums. Have fun and good luck!![]()

I'm sure this all works but man you lost me in step 4 LOL.
So what's the advantage of doing all this or doesn't Instant Copy do the same thing in effect?
-
Sorry I lost you man lol
I just wanted to do it as a step by step guide w/out pics. Its actually pretty easy to follow if you try. The advantage is definitely TIME (HALF) and possibly MAIN MOVIE QUALITY with control of final output to maximize it. In Instant Copy you can only decrease as to 30 percent for the "extras" and it sometimes won't let you get over 70 percent for the main movie quality. Then you have to CUT out extras. Also, if you don't guess the output percentage right, you have to do it all over
Also, IC7 will often times NOT use the entire DVD thus suffering another hit in quality. My method works around that in that you dont sacrifice any extras and you get the main movie quality to the equivelant or better than IC7 at 80 percent. I was impressed. That's why I made the guide. I did Chicken Run and it looks GREAT. I wanted to share it with other people.

Ha so I will give it a try. How hard is it to use IFOupdate and IFOedit? I have never used those two programs.

whats with all the steps. all you need is DVDDecrypter Dvd2one and Nero to copy any dvd.

Using Ifoedit, DVD2ONE and make-it-easy it is easy to compress the main movie and extras and keep the menu uncompressed.
But using your method you can compress the menu too but it takes alot longer than the method I was using.
My question is this, what is the point of compressing the menu when it usually only takes up about 20MB?
Thanks for the guide though, the only reason I wouldn't use it is because it takes alot longer than the method I was using just to compress the menu. If you came up with alot quicker way I would most certainly use it.

The reason I posted my method is because it DOES compresses both the EXTRAS and MENU. How is Dvd2one or makeiteasy compressing the Extras? I dont think it does. Doesn't DVD2one just compress the MAIN movie? Makeiteasy just adjusts the IFO's? The result is:
Uncompressed EXTRAS
Uncompressed Menu
Compressed main movie...correct?
If I'm wrong let me know.
TeFLoN -
If you use DVD2ONE, Make-it-easy and Ifoedit you can compress the main movie and the extras, just not the menu.
Best Regards.

Don´t get me wrong but... STICK with InstantCopy!!! I bought InstantCopy 7 and I am VERY VERY happy with it. SPEND a few bucks (I am from Europe so... SPEND A FEW euros)
There is no need to use lots of programs when there is one little program that makes it all and it´s very cheap for what it does.
DVD2One is fantastic for the price and speed but the quality and no option for extras make it of medium use.
My option:
- Excelent quality, LOTS OF TIME and no extras: DVD2AVI & CCE / DVD Maestro
- Very good quality and extras: InstantCopy
- Good quality, SPEED, and no extras: DVD2One
My common option: INSTANTCOPY 8) -
Barry,
Please be specific...I have makeiteasy and I dont see where it compresses the extras...can you please tell me how it does that? Or are you saying DVD2one compresses the extras? If it does, how do you do it?
TeFLoN -
Ok well say the Movie is VTS_01_1.vob - VTS_01_4.vob
and the extras are VTS_02_1.vob - VTS_02_3.vob
1) Rip the whole DVD to your harddisk.
2) Copy VTS_01 vobs to a different folder and create ifos with ifoedit.
3) Convert the movie with DVD2ONE and place in a different folder.
4) Place the vobs you just created back to the original folder and update the ifo with make-it-easy.
5) Copy VTS_02 vobs to a different folder and rename them to VTS_01 then create ifos with ifoedit.
6) Convert the extras with DVD2ONE and place in a different folder.
7) Rename the vobs you just created back to VTS_02
8) Place the vobs you just created back to the original folder and update the ifo with make-it-easy.
I tried it and it worked for me but I don't know how to transcode the menu as well.
P.S. Remember you will have to calculate the sizes you are transcoding to so that it will overall equal 4.36GBs
Best Regards.

to simplfy;
1.) compress extras with DVD95COPY-15 minutes
2.) create ifo files-20 minutes
3.) compress movie with DVD2ONE -30 minutes
4.) update movie ifo
Takes over an hour. Based on other posts an hour plus puts you the same league as InstantCopy in terms of time.
Method does work. -
Just one comment on your method. DON'T compress the menus, if you have simple menus that's ok, but on other you will have problems, trust me on that one. And since menus are not that big why compressing it anyway. Just don't take it or keep them normal.

Barry,
I tried MATRIX with your method and it was a no goI ripped the entire DVD, took the main movie vobs ( vts_2) and put them in one folder, took the extra's and put them in another folder (from what I could tell it was the vts_3 files) I never moved the _0.vob files from the Full RIP folder. I ifoedited both of them (I did the EXTRAS first, so I could tell how big to make the main movie). That was a little out of sequence from what you did. I then put both of them back one at a time from the OUTPUT of dvd2one and ran MAKEITEASY on the FULL RIP folder each time. I then ran IFOEDIT and get vts sectors on that. I ran the movie and it freaked out on chapter one....I pointed MAKEITEASY to the vts_2_0 ifo and the vts_3_0 ifo for original file paths since vts_2 was the main movie originally and vts_3_0 was the extras. I'm not sure but the only thing i can think went wrong was the movie is a difficult one. Vts_1 was also a large file set but not as large as vts_3 or vts_2. I know vts_2 was the main movie because I ran "select main movie files" in decrypter just to make sure. any ideas?

Hmm i'm not to sure where you went wrong or where I went wrong on my steps. I will copy the matrix within the next 1 or 2 days and I will let you know the steps I used in order to do it.
Best Regards.
Barry
P.S. The last movie I used this method for was lotr disk 3 and 4 and it seemed to work fine.God's in his heaven... All's right with the world!

Funny thread... Let me join in!
Wouldn't be easier this way?
DVD Decrypter: File Mode
DVD95Copy
DVD2One - size of compress extras/menus/etc. (new version) ( "-" = substraction)
IFOUpdate on all IFOs that were author...
Have fun cracking it

Barry,
I figured out the problem...jdobbs from Doom9 answered my question in another forum there:
It's an interleaved DVD. So he said it can't be done unless you have a THOROUGH knowledge of IFOEDIT and IFOUPDATE etc...It sounds like it's a little beyond my capability. Thats' ok. I just did it the old dvd2one way by the "quick" method. I'll just use IC7 until I figure out your method.
TeFLoN -
Okay I tried to copy "The Matrix" using my method and it worked no problem.
You can see what I done here https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=146795

Thx BARRY!!
That was a pretty impressive tutorial bud. It's exactly what I was looking for. I must have screwed up an ifoedit somewhere on my previous attempt. I'll share your tutorial on the other forums like Doom9 and CDFreaks if you want. Those guys would love it.

Thanks that would be great.

Am I missing something here but i've just ripped a dvd with dvddcrypter, all files not just the movie, then used dvd95copy select source, select dest, press start, all done, movie, extra's, menu etc.

Chicken Run isn't exactly a DVD of complicated struture or major size (or is it?)
as for people still comparing IC & DVD2One along with DVD95Copy now, you somehow always seem to mention the speed difference in processing but overlook the fact that ACTUAL usertime is way way longer and even then you are not guaranteed to rebuild the original DVD structure
but when I open IC, within a few minutes I click GO, then that's it!, no rebuilding, so I am out on the drink by 7 o'clock and come in drunk to a DVD, whereas using the methods here I may just catch last orders as I have to babysit the computer trying to rebuild the DVD
How many DVD's do people need to backup in a day?
All the work regarding IC is involved in the ripping & stripping at the start, and if done correctly results in a perfectly acceptable quality DVD. Most user reported problems with IC can now be overcome apart from a few problematic DVD's
Good guide tho Teflon
but I'm just getting the point across that IC is a 1:1 backup tool and the best that is available at the moment for all round quality
for those of you with IC and have issues, try my guide I'm currently constructing

I agree totally with you MackemX..i like IC7 also
Just trying new stuff that's all.

I guess in time we will be spoilt for choice regarding DVD backup software as the current ones will probably improve and other newbies will also become available
I cannot imagine what it's is gonna be like when Blue Laser DVD's with 27GB become common use in a few years time
