  1. I was wondering if the same bitrate for a VCD (mpeg-1) or SVCD (mpeg-2) results in a different videoquality?

Something like this has been asked before. I don't remember wether or not there was any definite answer that everyone agreed on.

Keep in mind VCD only has one video bitrate 1150kbps at 352 x 240/288 res. So, you would have to create an SVCD 1150kbps at 480 x 480/576. Since SVCD resolution is approx 2.72 times that of VCD the bitrate would be spread out over a larger area I believe the VCD would look better at 1150kbps. I have not tried this.

That being said, I believe if you are talking XVCD (maintaining VCD resolution) but at a higher bitrate, like 2000kbps vice SVCD, I would think the SVCD image would be better quality.

You could do some sample captures/encodes and try it out for yourself.

I've tried making XVCDs at 2000kbs....and they don't look any different to a VCD at 1150kbs...its cos of the resolution I believe...even an XVCD at 2000kbs still only has a resolution of 352x240. Totally different with an SVCD though...my SVCDs at 2000kbs look MUCH sharper than an XVCD at 2000kbs...probably cos they have a bigger resolution of 480x480.
I conclude therefore that it is a waste of time making an XVCD with a bitrate larger than 1150kbs UNLESS you also increase the resolution...I tried this and my DVD player refused to play them! ....I stick to SVCD now.
