I usually rip to SVCD but I recently became aware of the concept of MiniDVD. So out of curiosity I ripped a special feature .vob off one of my DVDs and just burnt that file onto a CDR, it was a little over 15 mins and approximately 550MB. I pooped the CDR into my standalone player and it played back fine. Now having said that my question is this: When I purchase a DVD Writer does this mean that a DVDR will playback with just bare .vob files without the need to correctly author or include video_ts/audio_ts folders? For example if I rip the the main movie .vobs from a DVD and they total less than 4.3GB when i burn these files straight onto the DVDR, will this play correctly like the above mentioned CDR?

Woops... That should read "I popped the CDR into my standalone player" and not "I pooped the CDR into my standalone player".

  3. Not necessarily. Many DVD players take different actions depending on the media type. For instance many will play mp3's from CD media but will only play Video from DVD media. So just because something works on CD-r doesn't mean it will work on DVD-r.

Two ways to find out. First one is to ask someone who has the same player and has tried what you want to do (Or look in the DVD players list to see if it is mentioned there). Second way is to try it your self. Even if the answer is no, authoring to DVD-video spec is not difficult with modern tools.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply bugster. I realise that it would be just as easy to burn to the correct specifications, I was just curious that's all. Hopefully be getting a burner soon so I can test it then.

The Palsonic DVD-4000 from australia seems to play MPEG2 stuck on a DISC then

Most of our players won't do this...
I think you have one of maybe 4 players in the world that'll play BARE VOBS on the MEDIA...even a CD...
My player will play MPEG2 files in the ROOT of a DVD but the only thing most settop DVD players can see on a CD is AUDIO or Mp3 or VCD

    This is palsonics site
