  1. I have a Sony DRU-500A attached to a built in Promise controller (PDC20276) and when I burn i get a really high processor utilization on my Athlon 2100+ (ie. about 80% when burning a DVD+RW at 2.4x). According to the controller, it boots UDMA2 (Nero reports it in 'Ultra' mode). Does anyone have any idea what is causing this and how I can fix it?

for starter, do NOT put it on Promise.

  3. Why not? And how else do you suggest that I connect it?

  4. DoWirc,

I have a Maxtor Ultra 133 controller, similar to your Promise card. I use Win2k, and after reading another forum thread regarding Optical drives on expansion controllers and contacting Maxtor, I now understand that although you CAN run Optical drives on them it's not recommended. The controllers are designed for higher speed IDE devices, and as Optical drives are slower, this apparently has something to do with it.

I'm running a 50x cd-rom on mine because the two sony burners I have (cd and dvd) won't rip audio. The rom and PC seem to work fine, but I am getting event logs in the Win2k even viewer.

I would run your burner from one of the motherboard controllers, preferably NOT on the same controller that contains the data that you're burning from to maximize throughput.
