  1. Im trying to use bitvice encoder to reencode a DVD-9 to fit on a DVD-R. I found a tutorial online that involves splittting the DVD up into 1.8gb pieces, converting to Quicktime then importing into bitvice. The problem is that with all these conversion, one needs 60gb free just to do one DVD. Does anyone have a faster, simpler, and most importantly disk space less intensive method of going from DVD-9 to bitvice to DVD-R?

Also any help with tweaking the bitvice settings would also be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

With forty-two (although it takes awhile) you only need about 15GB. And with about 4 DVD -> DVD-R conversions under my belt, I've never gone over that. Armageddon took about 12GB -- 6GB for the rip, then about 3.06 for mpg file and .iso image.

Otherwise, if you don't want to use forty-two, there's also ffmpegx and the methods used with that program.

I would try any other method than which you are using. 60GB is insane. A person shouldn't need one whole empty harddrive for one DVD.

  3. Thanks for the quick reply. Ive tried forty-two and ffmpegx extensively and am not satisfied with the quality of the end product. They both rely on mpeg2enc, which is seems to not be able to we tweaked to produce files with a predictable output size. Likewise forty-two takes my 1ghz G4 24 hours to encode a movie (which usually has to be done several times just to get the output file anywhere near the correct size).

Bitvice output so far is beautiful (literrally can't see the difference btw original and recompressed). Now if i can just make the process easier....
