Hi,
I have a sony DRU500AX and when ripping a store bought DVD movie the read rate speed is from 1.8-2.2x.
This sony has a read speed of 8X, Is there a setting I'm missing to get it to rip above 2x?
Thanks

A FAQ - a lot of drives are apparently locked to 2x when ripping, plus if you're decoding or anything else "on the fly" while you're at it, expect a performance hit if you have a slower machine.
Also the way your controllers / motherboard is set up could have an impact, but your findings are in no way unusual. -
I have managed to get DVDDecryptor to rip at 4x, where it nearly always rips at 2x. Some (older) movies will NOT rip above 2x, but most fo the newer ones have.
Open you DVD in a software viewer and watch the first minute of the main movie. Pause it and launch DVDDecryptor. Extract. Mine will usually start at 2.3x and inch up to almost 5x at the end of the rip. This works about 1/2 the time. If I don't open up the viewer, it only rips at 2.1x. This isn't cache, I have my DVD drive locked to 32 MB of cache, and no disk caching.
I'm not sure why this happens. I do know a LOT of drives lock CSS disks to 2x speed. However, my cheapo 16x locks most disks to 2x (DVDR data disks only read at 2.1x, and it's not a DMA issue). Some DVD data disks read at 10x, so it seams almost random. Some disks read fast at one time and not another. To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
This is down in part to the CSS structure on the disc.
If the key is set all the way through the movie (and it can change quite a bit), then you can probably adjust your ripping software to only look once for the key.
However, if you leave it set to the default which is probably every VOB-ID but could be every Cell-ID, this can slow the rip down quite considerably. This coupled with stripping streams on the fly can make some rips almost painful to watch.
I suggest going for a coffee. -
I wouldn't waste a expensive DVD writer like the sony one you have for ripping, buy yourself a cheap Liteon 166 which can rip DVD-Video at an average of 8x.
Hope that helps.

How do you "extract" the files from the DVD software player into Decypter?? (sorry i'm clueless..). thanks.

You don't. You use the player software to try and trick the drive into thinking it's an open DVD and not a CSS DVD(thus it's not locked at 2x). Once DVDDecryptor is running, you can close the software player.

Ah.. got it. Darn! If I'd have known that the other day, I wouldn't have purchased a Liteon drive!
Thanks!
