to start off, i am brand new at this game, but very quick learner and willing to try to figure out by myself.
~N E W B I E~
dl a movie (video) and want to turn it into a vcd or svcd.
1) i open the avi video file in virtual dub and get error
2) if play the video get second error
3) file info
4) open file in virutaldub mp3 i get no error. i try to play it and get error
the video file does play in media player cause i have the codec installed.
also, i think i rename it from mpg to avi, does it matter ?
also, does the windows media player version also matter, still using default for win 98 se. i dont like 6.4, 7.1 etc.. dont like the new ones
i figured out a few things while trying.
that the audio extracted tag 0055 can only be direct, not full uncompressed, then rename to mp3, i used winamp to decompress it.
should i have used anything else.
i know that is not ac3 cause i tried everything to decompress that also
when i play the fully uncompressed audio file it is 4 sec shorter in length then video file. why ? how ? normal ?
can i also extract just the video portion ?
i want to make it a vcd or svcd to play in my dvd player that supports both.
it is 23.9?? fps, if that matters to what type of video i have to encode it to

that is indeed my problem as well...
and I can't seem to come up with any solution...I have spent hours...and tried many different methods.
if anyone does figure something out please let me know too!
thanks! -
k, the prob is is that some avis will not load in to virtual dub because the sound is compressed, hence smallish avi around 700 megs
you both need to decompress it 1st, there is a decompresser that you load the avi into and it creates a new file called blahblah_pcm.avi (blah blah being original filename)
then virtual dub can load the _pcm file and carry on as usual
the decompressor can be found here
http://www.mnsi.net/~jschlic1/
dl the encoder prog, along with it comes the decompressor
you might find that some avis load fine into VDub and some wont, if you tried using tmpegenc to encode the avis that are coming up with error in Vdub you will prob find sound sinc probs
ive written a small ish word document to help if poss

ok i used the decompressor in that avi2vcd package, took only a few minutes, that was good to decompress everything.
if i play the new decompressed _pcm.avi file the audio is out of sync is that normal ?
i opened _pcm.avi it virtual dub and fully processed saving the wav into 44.1 KHz wav file.
i play just the wave file and it is 4 seconds shorter in length
is that normal ?
if normal how do i encode and make a final vcd or svcd thanx !!?? -
The audio is probably AC3. With VirtualDub, select Direct Stream Copy under Audio, then Save WAV under File.
Rename this file to .ac3 instead of .wav
Use Headac3e to decode ac3 to wav.

what i do is, load up Vdub select audio/fullprocessing mode
then audio/compression/nocompression
then audio/conversion/44100 and tick high quality (if its already 44100 then just tick high quality
then file/save wav and name it similar to video just so that i dont get confused i.e. like black night film i save as blackwav
then in tmpenc i load the blacknigh_pcm avi into video and the blackwav audio wav into the audio
