I'm so f*cking fed up.
I have a pioneer dvr-105 and have spent over $60 on blank disks.
I have burned a dvd using dvdgear pro, dvd plus, dvd2one, nero, using tools like ifo edit, vob edit, etc.
the movies work perfectly in my pc, the whole way through, w/ menues.
NONE of them work in my dvd players!!!
I have the following:
PS2
Shinsonic dvd-100
Daewoo dvd-5800
audiovox dvd1500
3 of them won't play past chapter 18, and the daewoo won't play past chapter 4.
so wtf is up? is it a media problem? i've used legacy, fujifilm, and dvdpro. no difference in playback quality or where it stops.
what dvd players actually play a dvd-r?

vampirexxi, part of the problem I see is that you have not used any reputable media. Next, in order for a standalone to be able to play a DVD-R it usually has to be a multiformat player. Although there are many standalones that will play them although it doesn't say it in their user manuals. Two things I would try. First, do a search on "DVD PLAYERS" on this site, and try to find a great "Multi-format" DVD Player. Next, check out some of the more "popular" less expensive media from this site, such as Ritek, ACCU, just to name a couple. Also, one last thing you might want to try is using RecordNow Max to burn. You can download a demo off their site. Here is the link:
http://www.stompinc.com/recordnowmax/rnmx-retail.phtml?stp
From what I've read, people have used this software and had their DVD-R's and DVD+R's read in everything from standalone players to X Box. Being that you can download the demo, I would try that first, as it will cost you no money. You might want to do a search about RecordNow Max on this forum. I personally think it is the absolute best DVD burning software on the market. It has worked flawlessly for me each and every time, as well as for many others. -
I think its your media. Go to the local store and buy an expensive quality dvd-r and try it. From the dvd players you listed, the ps2 and the daewoo should play burned dvds.
-
i think it may be the media. i went to walmart and tried out some of their dvd players w/ a dvdpro brand dvd-r that i burned. it either wouldn't be recognized in the ones that specifically said on them dvd-r/rw compatable or stopped at the same spot.
is ritek a good enough brand? i wanna buy in packs of 25 or so, b/c of the price, i just can't afford the memorex or expensive ones (i'm sure most cant)
i did have a particular instance w/ 2 movies burned to fujifilm disks, they play all the way through, but the other 2 that were burned on fujifilm don't. i would have expected fuji to be a good brand. i'll have to look around. thanks.
also, i'll have to try gear and see if it makes a difference. -
Fuji isn't a reputable brand when it comes to DVD-R media, then? I'll have to remember that... (It's really sad when you can't judge a brand name by experience with previous products anymore; I always had good results with Fuji's audio & videocassettes, CD-R media, and photo film... Similarly, I always liked Memorex's cassette tapes, their MiniDisc blanks are good, but their CD-RW discs turn out to be crap. Can't trust anyone anymore.
)
Personally, I much prefer the TDK blanks. I know, they're a bit more expensive, but what I generally do is wait for them to go on sale at CompUSA (which they tend to do every couple of months, it seems), and buy up a whole bunch of four-packs at $8.99 apiece. Never had a problem with one yet, and I've burned my way through close to fifty of them by now...
The Apple-branded media is also quite reliable, from what I've found. If there's a Fry's Electronics anywhere near you, they typically have it in stock, and their price has recently dropped to $14.99 for a 5-pack. Both brands will burn at 2X in the Pioneer drives.
Stay away from the KHypermedia stuff sold at OfficeMax. I haven't run into anyone yet who has anything nice to say about it. -
i think i'm gonna run to compusa tomorrow and pick up a 4pk? or 5 pk of tdk and try burning the same movie using dvdxcopy, ripping/nero, & ripping/recordnow max.
i'm hoping all 3 ways will play in at least one of my players. i seriously doubt the programs are what is the cause, but rather the media. especially w/ my experience at walmart tonight. -

I've also got the Pioneer DVR-A05. For DVD media the best choices seem to be Ritek and TKD. I've been using TKD and everything works. That's in my PSX2, roommate's sony (forget model) and my cyberhome 500.
I got them from http://www.allmediaoutlet.com -
how many companies out there don't outsource for the majority of their products just to put their own nameplate on them? even my pioneer isn't pioneer - they outsource from cendyne. and my memorex cdrw is actually i/o magic.
i'd be interested to see if there was any way to figure out a producer of certain disks (like who tdk gets them from) based on the numbers on the inside ring, and if that company sells to the public. -
No, they really aren't. As a matter of fact, they suck to put it bluntly. Good thing you had good success with Fuji media on CD-R's, those must be the ones made by Taiyo Yuden. I have three FUJI CD-R's and the dye on ALL THREE is chipping and peeling. The manufacturer was FUJI, but those were the older CD-R's. Apparently, the majority of FUJI CD-R's are now made by Taiyo Yuden which are of excellent quality. Memorex make crappy DVD-R media as well. So you are correct in your statement that you can't just assume that because a company makes an excellent quality form of CD media, then they will also make excellent quality DVD media. Memorex, by the way, doesn't manufacturer the majority of their CDR's either.
Oh to the original poster, if you get ritek, make sure its the 4x or G03 silver tops. My white top G03 suck, out of the 7 discs i burned only 1 plays correctly all the way until the end. -
One option you might consider is to get a "Test Package" from one of the on-line companies. I did this to test different types of media to determine which works best for me.
The package I got was $14 and included two discs each of 5 differenct brands of media. -
I got a 104, ps2 v7 with magic 3.I use ritek g03 silver top(€40 for 25 from http://www.cdr-by-mail.co.uk/acatalog/index.html)
For movies I use smartripper to rip complete movie to hard drive. Then dvd2one and burn to disc on 104 with 1.31 firm with prassi primo dvd.
All play perfect 100% of the time.
For games i use prassi to create .gi and burn back 2 disc at 2 speed. All perfect.
From my expierience its rare that what works for 1 will work for another, but i think its ur media. Get a trial pack of dvdrs and try em all at 1x,2x and 4x usin nero, prassi and instantcopy or dvd2one. U'll get it rite eventually. -
Well, usually, you can't tell just by looking at the packaging, especially if its retail. You have to get a program. Check this out https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmediaform.php?advdinfo=1#advdinfo. Using this means you have to open the DVD. If you buy bulk from sites, most of the time they tell you what it is(ie Ritek G03). Don't be fooled into thinking just because one brand was made by a particular company all its discs are made by that company. Sometimes brands use different companies. TDK used to make all their CD-R and DVD-R discs. Now I think, they use a third party company for their cheaper discs and make the expensive discs themselves.
To tell you the truth, I would have never bought memorex if I had came to this site first because of all the bad reviews it got. I just bought it because it was the cheapest pack at staples. Suprise, surprise, it was actually made by taiyo yuden. -
BTW if they carry them Apple DVD-Rs are not $15 for 5 at most compusas... thats teh 2x ones, the new 4x are more of course.
