  1. I just bought the CenDyne version of the Pioneer 105 DVD-R/RW burner. I must say that I am highly impressed. The DVD-R's I have burned have played fine in my Daewoo 5000N. Once again, highly impressed! And much cheaper than the Pioneer version!

  2. Welcome to the club!

Can you do me a favor? If your drive came with firmware 1.00, try and see if you can update it to firmaware 1.21 provided by pioneer at this page: http://wwwbsc.pioneer.co.jp/product-e/ibs/device_e/dev00001r_e.html .

I tried updating to 1.21, but I got the following error:

    /// DVD-ROM/DVD-RW Firmware Update Utility Ver1.25C
    Start updating the device No.1.
    Current Revision>>PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105 1.00 02/10/10
Model name of kernel part is not matched.
0 drive(s) have been updated sucessfully.

  3. I did the 1.21 firmware upgrade two weeks ago on my Cendyne DVR-105 with no problems...

  4. Then this definately has something to do with my pc's configuration because I returned my first unit due to the problems I'm having with this second one. Perhaps I shoud do this through dos? It's not that big of a deal really since the burner performs as advertised, but its just so awkward. Oh well

  5. I have had the exact same problem as you have had when trying to update my firmware.

I wonder why it is so picky with some of us but not others.

  6. Can anyone with the Cendyne DVR-105 tell me specifically what the upgrade from firmware 1.0 to 1.21 fixed or improved for you?

Or did you just upgrade for upgrading sake?

My burner is working flawlessly with 1.0 right now and other than wanting burn cheap 1x media at 2x what more can I hope for?

I have the Cendyne DVR-105 from staples.com, I was able to upgrade the firmware through bootup in DOS. My came with firmware 1.0 and upgrade just because its newer and there must be some fix.

  8. thelucky, did you first attempt updating through windows and received the error I mentioned?

BTW, others are having this same problem over at another thread I started: http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewtopic.php?t=10424
    Very odd indeed.

Definately do it from DOS, otherwise it may not work. I had the same problem, then booted from a clean boot disc, and is flashed fine

  10. I have found that this writer does not make work very well as a ripper.
It would not read a couple of rental discs that I had at the moment.
I had to reconnect my trusty old Pioneer 116 in an external USB 2 case.
Ripped with no problems as always.

  11. Just bought this writer in OfficeMax and it already has the latest firmware installed. Nice saving at $219 after $50 mail in rebate, better than the Pioneer price.

  12. For the guys with firmware problems. Is your drive set as master on IDE chain 2? Because most older drives have to be there for the firmware upgrades to work. Newer drives should work from any position/chian. But...

I read somewhere that the firmware update of Pioneer drives would fail if you have the Intel Application Accellerator installed on a system, and that in order to install the firmware from Windows you would need to uninstall IAA.

    I don't know.
I went to their site and that burner is $289, not $299.
The rebate is $50, not $60.

    The coupons?

Total is $199, same as at Frys.

    Maybe I did something wrong.

    Edit*

I see when you click on "More info" about this drive, it says there's also a $50 rebate (I guess it comes with the drive?). So that brings it down to $150.
Don't know if the $50 rebate comes with the Frys drive.

Color me happy. Got the CenDyne DVR-105 for $150 after rebates and Staple coupons. Did the quick firmware update. Installed the included Sonic MyDVD and burnt away. Can't be beat.
