  1. Now i've ready many messages about conversion times , ranging from 1hr to several days etc . I have only a PII wiv 128mb Ram and it takes me about 9hrs to convert which i don't find a big problem as i start the conversion b4 i go to bed or go to work and all is complete wen i return. I know obviously in my case a faster CPU and more Ram will half that time but has anyone any other suggestions of speeding the process that they would like to share wiv the poorer class that cannot afford such upgrades. No silly answers please..

On some people's computers, it takes 72 hours and more just to encode a single movie!!!!!

  4. I must add , i use the standard VCD settings . No filters or nothing , cuz if the source film is not good quality in the first place then its not worth converting, why do so many people have long encoding times when as i say i have an old computer ( PII , 128mb Ram) , use the standard settings and after 9hrs , voila , the films ready . No complaints , just looking for tips on speeding up the process . No hardware answers please.

  5. What? My response got blown away somehow!? Here's something like what I said...

JayT: I run a celeron 366 (@433) and it takes about 4.5 hours per one hour of source. What is your number for a one hour source and what resolution are your AVI files to start with?

Bizeebee: What are you running? A commodore 64?

Are you guys using any filtering? This can add MUCH time....

  6. Film length on average 90mins, using full screen (original aspect ratio) setting . I don't see why people have times exceeding 12 hours if they use mainly default template settings unless they r using filters. Y use filters , as i said if the film is not good quality in the first place why try and convert wen the filters won't improve the quality by a vast amount. I find the quality of standard VCD setting good enough . How much quality do people want. Most AVI films i am encoding at mo r DivX , quality is supperb and i dont find spending 3 days converting a film reasonable for a film i will only watch 2 or 3 times .

  7. I always capture to avi with a framesize of 336x288 and with mjpeg codec. The average datarate in the avifile with audio at 44.1khz 16bit stereo is 750k. The reason why i capture at 336x288 and not 352x288 is due to the overscan used by the tv. The time it takes to frameserve from virtualdub to tmpgenc and encode it to a standard vcd is 12 hours for 1 hour using all the filters i always use when encoding captured material to vcd. The time without any filters is 7 hours for 1 hour. All this is done on a p2 400mhz with 128mb ram.

  8. I have a Pentium III 650 mhz, 256 MB ram, Windows XP Pro. When I convert my DV captures for DVD, I use TMPEG 2-pass, min-2000, avg-6000, max-8000, highest quality motion search, and it takes around 72 hours for *one hour* of video. It would probably be much shorter, but I still use my computer at the same time, because I don't have a dedicated system for video. When I use the VCD template, it's more like 5 hours for 1 hour of video, so a lot obvoiusly depends on your source, settings, and of course system speed.
