    Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

  4. Apparently the DW-U10a is an OEM version of the DRU-500A (or the 'updated' version being sold now). This is much like the Pioneer 105/A05 drives.

    For anyone interested, it appears that NewEgg has some 500A available.

    Thanks for the info. I've been waiting on a 500A for about a month now through a supplier at work (why you ask? because I get it for cost) Come to find out last week that they've phased them out (which I expected) for the newer 500AX model and so now I've got to wait another week for that model. Bottom line is, I'm now getting the new model (big whoop, firmware change and upgraded packaging, I know) but from what I understand from the supplier, the new X drive will be more plentiful than the 500A. I'd wait another couple of weeks and then swoop down on the new drive, they should be everywhere.

  6. Don't know if this will help but the Fry's Electronics here in Vegas has about 60 of the 500a's on the shelf!! If you live in the area there's your source.

    No, it has the same features as DRU-500A.

    The maximum DVD-RW writing speed is 2x, not 4x.

    @The village idiot

    Panasonic now has a big competitor in the DVD Multi market. LG GMA-4020B has about the same features for less money. Only a little over US$200.

    And many will introduce DVD Multi drives with 4x DVD-R, 2x DVD-RW, and 3x DVD-RAM.

  9. Just a note about the panasonic recorder that has been mentioned here as having "about the same features" as the Sony 500A-

    The Panasonic does not burn +R or +RW formats!

    The Sony remains the only recorder that can burn all formats.

    Look for price drops in Sony's line within a few months.

    Please read carefully.

    I said Sony DW-U10a has the same features as Sony DRU-500A. It was The village idiot who mentioned Panasonic LF-D521JD and he/she was not saying it had the same features at all. And I also said about LG GMA-4020B which is a DVD Multi drive just like the Panasonic LF-D521JD.

    Thats tru... so what if sony can burn +r and +rw.... I own the sony dvdr drive and I never burn to dvd+r cuz they are expensive and I use the only dvd+rw that came with the drive to test before I burn to dvd-r....

    If you wanna burn movies and data... u do not need both functions of a sony drive... jus buy a dvd-r drive... you wont be disapointed...
