After authoring a DVD, I record it on DVD-RW or DVD+RW for "validation" on a set-top box prior to burning it on DVD-R. I prefer DVD+RW as they record at much higher speed and erase much faster. My recorder is the SONY DRU-500.
However I experience an iritating problem lately (today).
The rewritables won't play on the Set top box (yamakawa-215). I had this problem in the past and found out that if the DVD is recorded (with NERO) using UDF filesystem, all is ok. For extra compatibility, I choose UDF 1.02.
The set-top player loads the DVD, recognises it as DVD-VIDEO and stops there, showing the [STOP] icon on screen. The remote does nothing.
PowerDVD on the PC recognizes the DVD perfectly and all works fine on the PC.
To check if the media has had it, I tried creating a DVD using ULEAD DVD Workshop, recording directly on the recorder. This one worked fine. So I am guessing some filesystem or Nero related problem.
Any ideas?

I have a pioneer 103 and have problems sometimes with recording to RW. I found that the RW disks are either darker or whatever, but the set-top player has problems with them. In fact I've built a slideshow DVD on RW and it couldn't load it. I left it in the player and went back to my computer to built it on an R disk. When I came back in to try the R disk, the silly player had finally loaded the RW disk (it played for a while then couldn't read some of the menu again). But the R disks have always worked. Bottom line, I don't think the optics in the set top players is as good as the optics in the drives for computers, so you may have to use R disks (bummer, it would be nice to experiment on RW's until I'm satisfied with the video).
BTW...my set top player is a Samsung M301 (it reads VCD and SVCD disks as well as DVD-R and DVD-RW [sometimes]) -
I have fought compatibility issues with NERO and other burning software programs for month until a couple of weeks ago my copy of primo would not recognize my HP 200i. The luckiest thing that has happened to me in a while. Searching some recording posts I came across a few on Stomp Record Now Max Powered by VERITAS with a Primo type interface. I thought I would give it a try and low and behold what a great program. I have done over 25 projects with it now with out a glitch When I was using NERO and others, I held my breath to see if I made an expensive coaster or not. Also Primo was better but still had some erase and recognition problems with RW, when I made the purchase after only 1 day of the 30 day free trial, I found I was eligible for an update discount because or software I already owned came out to be under $25.00 US.
Just my 2 cents
NOTE:
HP 200i x2ea and DVR-105 x2ea this program also erased discs I was going to throw out because I could not find a way to erase and reuse after only a few burns.
A couple of my stand alone Panasonic’s are real picky!
