Hi,
I tried to encode LOTR=>divx (with GK) and because its widescreen in the final .avi the picture appears narrowed so i thought about cropping...??!! just wondering what size is it appropriate to crop for movies with widescreen so the final .avi looks "not as narrowed" and without loosing to much film detail...

i did this last night. crop off the black bars (elvish subs are in the frame). resize to the widescreeen divx standard (from all the other movies i've downloaded at least) 567x240 or you can use 720x240. heres a picture of what it should loook like

coorrel,
Try a few settings and see what works best for you.
I ripped LOTR FOTR and converted it to SVCD for my brother-in-law, who has a big screen 52in tv. He did not like the fact the the movie was so narrow and that the black bars on the top/bottom were so big (compared to other widescreen movies). So, I just reencoded it again but this time "stretched" the height a bit. Yes, I know that will make everything in the movie a bit "taller" but he is ok with that.
So, it comes down to personal taste. I would not accept it, but he does. -
