newbie question, dvd backup or dvd to svcd

is there any way i could make a copy of a dvd i have at home that i rented or bought to a cd r disc, so i could buy them and copy them, and be able to play the backup i have a yahama 16x burner, send me a link or let me know someone thanks

you need a dvd rom drive on your computer.
the files in the dvd needs to be copied into your computer,and then
converted to another format (svcd,vcd etc..)
there is no way of doing that unless you have a dvd rom.

if you have a tv card on your computer you can make a lower
qulity backup by connecting the standalone dvd to you tv card, you need to have macrovision off on your standalone dvd to do that.
