  1. I have an avi which I converted to mpeg with Tmpgenc. I first scanned the avi for bad frames with vdub and it came out clean. I saved the audio to wav, then converted to mpeg with standard settings:

    NTSC Film (MPEG-1 352x240 23.976fps CBR 1150kbps, Layer-2 44100Hz 224kbps). File size is 226mb.

When I try to burn with Nero, I get a "track following error." Burning with VCDEasy gives me a "buffer under run error." I tried burning to several disks (Sony CDRWs) but the same errors always occur. I watched both the avi and mpeg on my pc with wmp and they play perfectly.

One thing I noticed is when I load the avi into vdub and check file info, it reports the frame rate as 23.970 instead of 23.976. Can this somehow be causing the problem? Any guesses as to what else it could be and how might correct it?

  2. Am far from being knowledgeable so ignore my comments if it suits you. I'd be very amazed if the delta in frame per sec. would be the cause of your troubles.

Did you by any chance change CD-R / CD-RW brand or capacity (like moved from 650 Mb to 700 Mb disks) ? If you did, try with your "old" disks and see what happens.

If that does not help, then I don't know what to suggest, except from buying a new burner (that's how I solved a similar problem after deciding I wasn't going to let my problem limit my ability to burn high capacity CD-R's).

  3. omicron,
Thanks for your input, but I doubt it's my burner. I just authored 2 other VCDs ths morn without fail.

I haven't tried burning to any CD-Rs because my standalone doesn't play them, but I did try a different brand of CDRW (Verbatim) with the same result.

Interestingly, I ran the avi through DivFix, with disastrous results. When I clicked 'strip index" Divfix reported an I/O error (whatever that is) and just sat there. I exited and reloaded the avi, then tried 'rebuild index'. It processed the entire file, but produced hundreds of errors in the log. Here's a sample:

Corrupted data detected at frame 32022
    Error offset: 135563614 ($0814895E)
Corrupted data detected at frame 32023
    Error offset: 135563662 ($0814898E)
    etc, etc...

Also, when playing the resulting avi in wmp, all I got was a green screen and sped up audio.

So to anybody listening, is the avi corrupted beyond repair? Any other suggestions?

KingJohn's Guide to bad frames V2 VBR Update

File size 226Mb ? is that the mpeg 1 ? its very small, what size was the AVI, it must have been 120Mb ?

Did it convert correctly in TMPGEnc ?

  5. I did run the avi through vdub as per KJ's guide, and it reported zero bad frames across the board.

Yes, mpeg-1 file size is 226mb. The avi is about 45mb. Running time is approx 22 mins.

    Tmpgenc converted it without errors.

I did a simple multiplex on it and finally got it to burn without track following/buffer under run errors. However, playback on my standalone began to freeze after about 10 mins. I'll try to multiplex with bbmpeg and see if that works any better.
