  1. I have been working with TMPGenc for quite some time now under Win2k and Linux and have found that anything above v2.56 will randomly crash while encoding. This crash takes down the entire computer to the point that only a three finger salute will fix it.

At first I thought this maybe was a 2 pass VBR problem, but it also crashes under CQ-VBR as well. It makes no difference what source material I use. I have tried both DVD ripped video and self recorded mpg2 video.

I have reinstalled both Win2k SP2 and TMPGenc with no better results. In fact, the ONLY software now on the Win2k machine is DX8.1, TMPGEnc 2.56 and 2.59 and PowerDVD 4.0 w/codec.

I am starting to suspect TMPGEnc has problems with the Athlon XP processor. Does anyone have any ideas here? Anyone running TMPGenc 2.57 or greater with the Athlon XP?

I have run several hours worth of CPU and Memory tests with everything checking out just fine.

    My machine specs:
    Athlon XP1700
    256MB DDR / 266mhz
    Biostar M7-MIA RAID Motherboard

    Thanks,
    Musicman

  2. Check the TMPE BB, you will find that it has DEFINATE problems with Athalon processors. It is a very helpful bulletin board. There seems to be definate codec problems happening with 2.59 adn Win Media 9 codecs. The bulletin boards are littered with these complaints.

Tmpgenc crashes randomly for me also(only tmpgenc that crashes) but if I increase the directshow priority it works perfect. www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgenc#problems

  4. For some reason I cannor change priorities in the codec page. I right click and choose an option but nothing happens. I can check and uncheck but not change the priorities.

    Any suggestions?

  5. OK I figured out the priority change but when I try to raise Direct show it drops the codec saying it can't support higher priority

  6. I can run TMPG2.56 and below without a hitch. I am using DirectX 8.1 for Win2k, and not DX9.

I will however, try the priorities under DX and see if that has any effect. I will be very surprised if this does fix it though.

Since I originally posted, I have checked TMPGEnc 2.57 thru 2.59 on non-XP Athlons under both WINE and Win2k with no lockups
(So, these later versions indeed work great under WINE).

My conclusion, either there is a bug in TMPGEnc v2.57 and greater where XP chips are concerned, or my CPU has a bad instruction in it somewhere. If the latter, I would surely see lockups with other rendering programs, such as Lightwave 3D, right?

    Hey all,

I'm using TMPGEnc Plus 2.58 and never had any problems until today. What's different? I'm re-encoding DVD using the wizard (as usual) but trying to output separate video and audio streams instead of mpeg2.

5 random crashes in 5 attempts.

I've just started the wizard and output to mpeg. I'll de-mux later....

    Regards,

    Rob

Now it's getting even more wierd.

TMPGEnc used to be rock solid, now it crashes on nearly every occation - mostly re-boots but occasional grinding to a halt mid-way through encoding but still using up 100% CPU!

    Any ides?

Don't want to speak too soon, but Baldrick's tip on increasing direct show priority has worked - 3 hr encode and no crash!

  11. TMPGEnc is a crash prone app for me, (Changing priorities or not), above v2.53 on Win98. It and the Kernal just don't get along.

  13. I finally got my problem fixed, both under WINE and Win2k. The solution: a new motherboard. Strange how the old motherboard works fine under every app with the one exception of TMPGenc. Anyway, that's the story folks.

I don't think that's the answer for all of us - all our motherboards worked fine with TMPGEnc previously, so there is no reason to suspect it. Personally, I reckon that the software gets corrupted but manages to stay on after uninstall and re-install - like it stays in the registry. Maybe only a re-format and re-install of the OS is needed. There goes 3 hours......

I didn't mean to imply it was. I merely wanted to express that this had fixed my particular problem.

It's not so hard to use regedit and search for TMPGEnc. Find the entries and remove them. If you have to reinstall anyway, what's it going to hurt to try this method?

Absolutely true (I presume, since I don't know how to use regedit and thus what to look for ). But then you wouldn't have to get a new motherboard, unless that was on your shopping list anyway. I'd be interested to know what the cause of all these sudden problems is.
