  1. I use moviefactory 2. If you use moviefactory 2 and either TMPGenc or CCE to encode, please respond to my question.
When you make a large MPEG file using VBR and then you import the MPEG (at least 1 hour clip), do you have any problems with the slide (jog) bar when making chapters.

Only when I use a VBR encoded MPEG an hour or so in length do I have this problem.

I called customer support and they advised that my 32 Meg ATI Rage fury pro was probably not enough. I find this hard to believe. If you are not having any problems, what video card are you using.

    BTW - I have P4 1.6, 512 Ram, 200 gig/8 cache HD. Thank you.

  2. I used Trial version and 1:30:00 movie and had very hard time to use "slider".

Thanks for your response. A couple questions: what program did you use to render. Did you use CBR or VBR.

What size video card do you have. I am trying to decide if I want to take the risk that going from a 32 meg card to a 64 meg card will actually make a difference. Look forward to your response.

  4. The slider has always been a pain for me in both versions 1 and 2 using top of the line ATI or nVidia cards 128 and 64 mb respectively. Video card memory or horse power isn't the problem. I always use VBR, so I can't comment on if that is the cause. One of the reasons I'd love to be able to just create and load a chapter list somehow.

Just let Movie Factory 2 make the chapters for you.

In the Add/Edit Chapter window just click on Auto set the time you want the chapters at and then click ok.

Video card is in my profile and it was VBR captureb by harware mpeg2 encoder.

  8. Sammie is right. I just installed a new videocard with 64 mg DDR and the "slider" is exactly the same - it is slow, it sticks and you can't pinpoint chapters.

This problem is unique to videos created in VBR mode in TMPGenc or CCE and that are about an hour or longer. This is a real problem and Ulead Tech Support (which is really a contradiction in terms), said that the solution was to upgrade the videocard. Of course the real solution is for Ulead to fix the bug in this program.

Solutions are apparently to use Auto Chapters. The problem is that if I want to create chapters of my son's birthday party and I want one chapter for the kids playing, one for the cake, one for the presents, auto chaptering doesn't help as it creates chapters based on equal time segments.

The only other solution is to break a longer AVI into several smaller ones and then render to MPEGs seperately. Many additional steps on the consumers part because Ulead will not acknowledge a flaw in their program.

I also downloaded a trial version of Workshop and guess what? Same problem!!! Why haven't I read about any body else's frustration on this issue other than Sammie's. Several hours of work to capture, edit and render and then, cannot pinpoint chapters (unless making smaller mpegs or using CBR.). I can't wait until programs like Maestro and Spruceup come back to the market.

Not true. I have same problem and file is createn by harware encoder and not TMPGenc or CCE. So it is more generic.

  10. You can type in the hours, minutes, seconds, in the flashing time box and the slider will go to that point. Then you can add chapter at that point.

  11. Spinner: The problem is finding the point you want to chapter. The reason I need the slider is to find the exact chapter point I want. With your method, you would need to know the exact minute and second of the clip you want to chapter.

However, if you use another program, like mediaplayer that you can use the slider, and write down the minute and second of the clip, it may just work. Is this what you are talking about? When I highlight the time and use the up and down arrow (with a large MPEG using VBR encoding), it takes 5 seconds to move the frame 1 second.

I will try your method, which is very interesting workaround. It is unfortunate that there needs to be a work around for a program that is supposed to be used for authoring and chaptering. Thanks for you response.

  12. Re: "it takes 5 seconds to move the frame 1 second. "

What I do is put the cursor square in the center of either only the hour, minute, or second in the time box, and the up or down button then works on moving one hour, minute, or second with each click. Must easier to scan for scenes. When I overshoot by a minute, I back up by seconds, then forward by decimal frames until I find the point I'm looking for. You can also highlight and type in a particular value, if you feel it's about 30 minutes ahead.

At least they didn't take THAT MF1 feature out of MF2.
