I have DVR-105 (Pioneer rebadge), first tried with original firmware and 2 days ago flashed to 1.21 firmware. XP1800 machine, 1 gig RAM, 7200 rpm hard drive.
I've followed Doom's guides very closely and a number of times to shrink down a movie to less than 4.5 gigs. ifoedit plays the files back with no problem and shows no errors. No menus or extras, just the movie and chapters. Movie is Blood Work.
I have successfully gotten ONE movie to backup.. Pandora's Box. Nothing else I've tried has worked including small cartoons that didn't need reencoding. Blood Work is what I've tried most of a test. About 7 coasters so far.
I've used Nero (and made sure joliet, udf, etc. was set exactly what you guys have said to set it to.. don't remember the settings off the top of my head), I've tried Record Now 4.0 and 4.5, Prassi DVD, and Gear DVD. Nero woudln't burn Pandora's Box properly but Prassi DVD.
Oh... yea.. I was about 90% successfully on Martin Lawrence (runteldat or something like that). The movie played back on my AD600a until it go to the last 30 mins and it just ended and went back to the beginning.
But back to blood work... it won't even play in power dvd or either of my 3 home players including the AD600a or RCA. If I open the .ifo files in power dvd it will play. AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS are there.. all files are in uppercase. The time indicator will advance as it is playing but won't show anything. I can press next to scroll through chapters and the display on any dvd player will show the chapter advancement and time advancement but black screen.
Any suggestions?

why is it every single newbie can come to this forum and say:
"how do copy a dvd"? and he'll get a dozen replies on what exactly to do even though the guides are right there.
i post a message saying i've followed the guides and wondering if anyone could point to what could be going wrong and no one replies.
oh well. -
There are so many reasons why things may not be working that you have to be more specific. You can't just say you are using IFOEdit correctly. Tell us exactly your steps from the first to the last.
What version of Nero are you using? Are you using the DVD-Video selection? If so, make sure Joliet is NOT checked. Also tell us what boxes are and aren't. Checking just one wrong box will throw everything off. After I re-installed Nero I made a few coasters because I didn't remember unchecking Joliet and thought it was supposed to be on. IF you are using UDF, it sounds like from what I've seen you need to use physical partition 1.02.

Thanks Rick for your time.
I'll have to get in front of my machine at home to go through and tell you what I have tried, but as far as Ifoedit, all I can say is if it's listed on Doom's guide to using Ifoedit then that's what I have done.
As far as Nero, I'll let you know later what settings I tried last but I mostly have been using Prassi DVD and Record Now.
But while I'm here I got an update. I got my SECOND dvd rip to work last night, following the same steps as I have with everything else. Movie was All About The Benjamins. I used Prassi DVD and it plays on one of my standalone players. What's weird is it won't play on my AD600a which I would think would be more compatible than anything but the rip last night will play on an old RCA Divx player.
One thing that was weird last night, I tried to do DVD Play in Ifoedit and it said '2 our of 3' something was wrong (again I'm not home and remember this off the top of my head) and would not play in Ifoedit. But I burned a VIDEO_TS folder anyway with the files and it plays on the PC and RCA Divx machine.
I've tried 3 different brands of media also.
I'll try to get you more info tonite.
Thanks again. -
Your video files are too large, keep them under 4.3gb or better yet around 4gb's for better playback results. The closer to the edge of the disk the less compatible it may be to play back properly on different DVD players.

thanks too unclebud,
the total of the VIDEO_TS folder of this last attept is 3.93 GB
here is the error i was referring to early that has said on blood work and all about the benjamins.. but all about the bejamins plays on my divx machine and the PC but not the apex:
*2 out of 3 dvd-video streams failed to render properly
-video stream
-subpicture stream
*no combination of intermediate filters could be found to make the connection.
*decode closed caption data not rendered properly
do you still want to continue?
so i click YES and get:
Cannot get the ivideowindow interface. sorry, can't play dvd-video titles.
but i can play other movies i've ripped and i can play the movie BEFORE i strip the extras using ifoedit. after stripping using ifoedit i get that error but it still plays on some machines as mentioned before.
no something that's strange too is if i check all VOD's in ifoedit during the strip it section, or if i select just the 1 or 2 that are in the biggest chapter the outcome is the same size.. there's no difference in # of vob's or vob size.
does that help any? -
ur blood work is too small for some reason, it comes out to
5 gig, so u have to drop chapters, unless u re encode, open
ifoedit, click vob extras, open the vst_01_0.ifo,click 5 boxes
under remux, select new VIDEO_TS folder, strip out everything
u can, keep all vobids though, and strip em.wait 30 mins,
open new vts_01_0.ifo, click get vts sectors, and ur done, burn
with older version of nero not 5510.... -
dvd udf/iso, the last one when nero 1st opens, every1 looks
arouind joliet options and such, u can chk udf options, should
be 1.02...
