Situation:
1) I used TMPGEnc to convert avi to mpeg w/ filesize of 792MB. (Used the 2-pass VBR @ 600 avg/1150 max/0 min, "Enable padding" was NOT checked.)
2) I used VCDEasy to create bin file, it gave an error: "This file requires padding, it may not play properly". I've never seen that error before so I proceeded, hoping for the best.
3) The bin file was created (VCDEasy auto-padded it for me) with a filesize of 911MB so of course Nero said that it won't fit on the disk.
Questions:
I'm sure there is some information about padding in these forums somewhere but nothing I found gave a general explanation of what padding does. Really...I did a search...honest.
a) What is padding?
b) Do I need to re-encode the mpg file with different settings in TMPGEnc or can I somehow disable the auto-padding of VCDEasy and still have it play properly once burned? (The file looks great to watch it on the PC.)
c) What could be a reason that I'm getting this padding message now? I've never seen it before even though I've previously used similar bitrate settings in TMPGEnc.
Thanks, hopefully I didn't overlook the "Padding for Dummies" page here in the Newbie section.

Been there. Done that!
It's caused by that you forgot to set the stream type to "MPEG-1 Video-CD (non-standard)" on the System tab.
Remultiplex the mpeg you have (TMPGEnc, MPEG Tools), and make sure you set the stream type to "MPEG-1 Video-CD (non-standard)"!

If it was already - no.
If it wasn't - yes!
Give it a try - it's a relatively quick thing.

Hey mats,
you were 100% right...sort of. I had used the Merge function of TMPGEnc to join serveral parts of the total file but failed to select the "non-standard" option on the Merge tab. ĄDOH!
I tried it again (this time selecting non-standard before I did the merge) and everything worked fine.
Thanks for your help!

Curiously enough, when I searched for "autopadding", among the threads at the top of the list were:
