  1. i have made many vcds and i know how they work. I was just wondering what is the best vcd encoder.

I like EO Video and TMPGEnc but are there others that give better quality?

Every video encoder takes a while to finish encoding something but i was just wondering what encoder will you give you the best quality?

I checked out the comparison chart but it didnt really help because it just told you about all of them but in the end they all equall out.

    I wanna know the best

I think that TMPGEnc has the best quality, and for mpeg-1 (VCD) it's free.

In my opinion, panasonic mpeg1 encoder produces the best quality compliant VCDs but if you need more flexibility you can't beat TMPGenc.

For best quality VCDs I think panasonic is better, not by much but clearly better to my eyes. The older version is limited though, you cannot use anything but the standard bitrate and settings so if you are making anything other than a standard VCD ie: an XVCD, then TMPGenc is the logical choice as its mpeg1 quality is very close to panasonic's.

The latest version of panasonic is more flexible and supports mpeg2 as well but I have not tried it.

  8. that damn moniker at the bottom of panasonic mpeg - anyone know how to get rid of it?

tried cropping but its seems invulnerable to it

  9. Personally I find the encodes from the panasonic encoder generally much lower in quality than Tmpgenc.

Ive been doing a lot encodes with Pro-coder lately and getting excellent results.

Mpeg2 I would rate Procoder clearly better than Tmpgenc.(at higher bitrates ,5K-9K)

Mpeg1 at least as good as Tmpgenc......still testing.

TMPGEnc gives the best quality MPEG-1.

  11. I use the Panasonic encoder for alll MPEG1 VCD's as it is the only one (haven't tried MainConcept yet) that will produce VCD's that will play on ANY DVD/VCD player. This also includes portables VCD players - which are notoriously picky in what home authored VCD's they'll play.

  12. TMPEG is far superior to Panasonic. Anyone can confirm this just by encoding a clip with subtitles and viewing on a HDTV. You'll clearly see that Panasonic's motion estimation is inferior by observing motion artifacts (Gibbs effect) around the subtitles and sharp edges. The effect is present in TMPEG, but much much lower. Also Panasonic's image is softer than TMPEG's image.

  13. Yeah, the image is slightly softer but I haven't seen the additional artifacts that you mention. Lets face it, ALL standard VCD encodes have lots of artifacts ... that's why SVCD was invented! The benefit of the Panasonic encodes over TMPG is that TMPG introduces a lot of padding that causes jumps and stutters on some standalone DVD players and Power DVD on a PC. In fact that was the reason why I used your template in the first place as it overcame the problems of CBR MPEG1 coding with TMPG.

  15. Yes, even if you do remux with bbMPEG. Trust me, I spent many months on this and have since given up on VCDs from TMPGenc as a bad job.

If you encode with TMPEG as "Video only", and then mux your audio with BBMpeg, you won't have this problem. If you encode your video and audio with TMPEG, and produce the mpeg directly with TMPEG, you will have problems with some standalones. I don't know of anyone that has had a problem muxing with BBMpeg, but make sure you mux with these parameters:

These parameters will work with just about any non-standard VBR MPEG-1 file. You can also "check" the "Pad VCD audio" to avoid a pop-up warning on VCDEasy regarding padding.

I agree about checking Pad VCD audio as VCDEeasy will pad your file if you don't check it. :P
