I have sucessfully produced good quality home videos in svcd format and am satisfied with the quality and compatibility on stand alone DVD players . My issue is with encoding time.

Would it be faster to encode and produce DVD vs SVCD?

Also, I am running P4 1.0 Ghz. Would upgrading to 2.6 Ghz make a substancial speed difference or would it still take hours to convert to mpeg2?

I have used Pinnacle, ULead, Movieshaker all slow as waiting for Christmas.

    Thanks

    I get excellent results with SVCD's using DVDX 2.0. with a P4 2.4.

I'm not too worried about the time it takes, as I set DVDX to switch off
after completion, ( usually while I sleep )

    A 100 minute movie take me 2 hours 40 minutes @ 2200 Bitrate.

Well converting to SVCD vs converting to DVD really isn't that much different. They are both mpeg2, both use the same basic encoding processes and techniques, and both would be done using the same encoders.

Generally speaking, higher resolution and higher bitrate settings will increase encoding time, so it would actually take longer to make a DVD than a SVCD, how much longer depends on your settings.

Upgrading your processor, especially by that much, will definitely decrease encoding time. You are still going to be looking at, at least a few hours though even on a very high end system.

  4. I am currently converting to a DVD compliant mpeg2 with TMPGEnc. 2 Pass VBR 4200kbps, high quality (slow) motion search precission. This is a 2 hour movie, estimated time to complete 9.5 hours.
