Hello. I recently purchased a General Electric (GE) DGE100N dvd player. Here is the problem. I purchased a cd-r that contained movies in DIVX format. My dvd player cannot play DIVX movies. I copied the movie and pasted it on my desktop. I opened it up on Windows Media Player and saved it in a .mpg extension. I burned the .mpg movie on to a disk and put it in my dvd player. It did not work. What is up with that? I thought dvd players play .mpg extensions. I went to the NEWBIE column and converting DIVX to VCD is too much work on a slow pc. Suggestions?

you have to convert or if you are in europe you can maybe find a Kiss DVD player..

but like everyone here - converting to vcd or svcd is your only real option other than watching it on your PC.

  3. First off: No DVD plays Divx files.
Second off: DVD players do not play MPEG extensions. They play VCD's or DVD's. The data needs to be arranged in a certain way. You can't just drop an MPEG file onto a disc and expect your player to know what it is. As far as the player knows it's a computer disc and rejects it.
The only suggestion I can give you is if you don't want to take the effort to make a VCD that will actually play in your DVD player then you don't really want to make one bad enough. That is your only option.

thanks for replying. i did some research and i found info on converting a divx to vcd. is here is the web address:

    http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/avi2mpeg1.html#nero

one question remains though. i went to the "newbie" column on vcdhelp.com and i saw that in order to do the conversion, you have to d/l certain programs (iFilmEdit, Nero Burning ROM, VirtualDub, XingMPEG, Encoder, etc). if i choose the new method (the link above) would i get the same result???

  5. There are numerous programs to handle this, each with dozens of available settings. You will most likely be using several programs sequentially to perform this conversion. Opinions vary, there is no one best answer. Because of the multitude of settings available, many comparisons are not accurately comparing the different programs, but rather the particular settings used, which will in fact vary based on the source material.

Some players DO play DIVX files - only 2 or 3 - and many will play an MPEG file burnt as a data disk.

However - I do not mean this to be rude, but if you were under the impression that simply renaming a file with an MPG extension would accomplish anything, you have a lot of reading to do. I would strongly recommend you start at the top of the WHAT IS section, read all of it, and then read ALL of the guides. Many of them will not directly apply to what you are doing, but you will encounter DOZENS of terms that you will not understand, reading all this info will help to explain the things that you need to know. There is a lot to learn, but the effort is worthwhile.

so you checked out that site? what i get from it, you only need the divx movie and the nero 5.5 rom to turn the divx to vcd.

You can burn an MPEG file as a .mpg, but you would have to burn it as a ISO.

Even if you just used nero it wont take any less time.

Nero will tell you that the file (avi) is not valid vcd stream and it will encode it to vcd . first off nero sucks at encoding and it will take just as long (if not longer) for nero to encode it than using tmpgenc or something else.

If your too lazy to do some work ( using 2 or 3 programs ) or just dont want to wait then i suggest giving up now.

  9. To answer the 2nd question, no I did not bother to check out the web site as one of the things I learned during EXTENSIVE reading and testing was that NERO is a decent burning program, but a VERY CRAPPY enocder, probably the worst one available.

Quality and Simplicity do not go together in this hobby, the choice is yours.

I wasn't aware of these players. But I tried just putting an MPG on a data disc and it didn't recognize it. Now, if you already have an MPG file all you need to do is go into Nero and select VideoCD and put the MPG on the burnlist and it will do it just fine. But just making a regular data cd with an MPG file on it will more than likely not work on your player.
Thanks Puertorican138 for clarifying this a little better. I forgot to mention this. As long as it's already an MPG file you only need Nero to burnit as a VideoCD.
