  1. I need to take a friends divx cdr and convert so I can burn on a vhs tape for his little boy. New to divx files. This is an avi of it's own I take it.
Can someone suggest how to make this conversion?
    Thanx guys/gals.

    A few things first:

    1) Does your computer have video out socket so it can be connected to your video recorder?

    2) If not, do you have a dvd player connected to the video? If this is the case you will be wanting to convert to VCD or SVCD first and then record from the DVD player.

Either way you will need the DivX codec which is available from http://www.divx.com the install instructions are pretty good so you shouldn't have too much bother with that part.

Hopefully this will get you started.

  4. If you have a card with a TV out available (or willing to spend the $) you can play it and record it straight from the video card... No time spent reencoding or doing tests and what not...

  5. Thanx.
I am trying this and when I get to the very end to start encoding I get an error message that says this "can't load P3Package.dll"
    Hmmm...... Something amiss here?
    I have downloaded tmpgenc 2.59.
    Help?

OK, as you may have gathered there should be a file in the directory that you unzipped TMPGEnc into called P3Package.dll (there should also be one called P4Package.dll but you don't need that). If it is missing then you will need to retrieve it from the original archive (TMPGEnc-2.59.47.155-Free.zip), if it or any of the files listed below is not in there then you have a broken copy and will need to download it again.

    CurrentCfg.tpr
    Help (directory)
    License.en.txt
    License.ja.txt
    P3Package.dll
    P4Package.dll
    Readme.en.txt
    Readme.ja.txt
    Template (directory)
    TMPGEnc.acf
    TMPGEnc.exe
    TMPGEnc.ini

Give more info and we can help. I do not understand what u mean by divx to avi. Are u trying to make it a diff type of avi or are you trying to take the divx avi and make it an mpeg. how do u plan on putting it on VHS. If u are going to play from computer and record to vhs u already can, no reencoding at all. If u are doing a diff way let us know and we will help.

If you have a TV-out card, then pretty simple. Use windows media player v6 if you can, if not, v7 is still usable but a pain.

Connect it up (TV out to VCR - hopefully it's not so old it doesn't have composite video/phono-audio in), ready a cassette, open file in windows media player. Set it to 'full screen', check you get a pic on TV through VCR
Then press the period key (between comma and slash, not on the number pad), or whatever the v7 shortcut is, if it has one. Start the tape recording. Give it five or ten seconds to get into it's swing, then hit spacebar (the v6 'play/pause' shortcut). There you go!

V7, I try to avoid as it's keyboard shortcuts are all fouled up and/or missing, not to mention all the other wierd things (i think fullscreen sizing is a bit screwy too). If thats the case, you'll just have to press fullscreen play and record as fast as you can and hope the kid doesn't notice or mind

If no TV out, then add-in cards or plug in boxes are fairly "cheap" to buy ($40-50, for what they are). Or create a VCD from one of the handy guides to the left if you have a DVD player with a suitable output. Copy protection shouldn't be problem as VCDs don't have macrovision!

Heck wait a few months and the kid will probably have a DVD player of his own anyway, and you can dispense with the VHS recording stage..

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!

  10. Like I said, if you have a TV out, you just play it and record it on the fly with no loss of quality related to conversion, and no time spent converting it either. I'd only conert it to (X)(S)VCD if I wanted to have a copy in that format.

Then unplug it, do your recording and plug it back in, or have you lost the adapter cable?
