  1. I made a vcd from a divx using TMPGE and when i burned it and put it in the standalone dvd player it will play fine then suddenly speed up, then slow back down to resync with the audio, then play fine for another couple minutes then speed up suddenly again. it is 23.976fps. i dont think the 29.97 vcds do this. What could be the problem.

its most likely the framerate. mine don't work at that rate either. you should use 29.97 ntsc or 25 pal.

My DVD player doesn't like 23.976fps either.

  6. Does anybody know why it does this? i read somewhere theat it is a bitrate spike caused by tmpgenc in the encoding process and something about the players drive not spinning fast enough(suggested using different encoder). sounded like a bunch of crap to me considering vcds are a constant bitrate. so are we at a general consensus that it is the player not the file or disc? also i would like to know if anybody has had anyproblems with svcds at 23.976 with 3:2 pulldown on playback. or is it just a vcd thing?

PAL is supposed to be 25fps instead of 29.97fps. NTSC is supposed to be 29.97fps.

  10. I didnt understand any of that. Has anybody that had problems with 23.976fps vcds used anything but tmpgenc for the encoder? Maybe it is a problem in the encoder causing bitrate spikes. Or do we think it is just incompatibility of the players.

    You could try CCE. :P

  12. It is more than likely an incompatability with the player. Many DVD players can support the ntscfilm framerate of 23.976, but there are some that cant. Try as suggested and encode to ntsc 29.97. Using a different encoder will not help IMHO

  14. Since film vcds seem to be plagued with this problem does anybody know if svcds have these problems in the same players if 3:2 pulldown on playback is used?

I've got a MPEG with a frame rate of 23.976 too. But burning directly on a VCD using NERO gives me an out of sync problem.
Could this also mean I've got to encode to a frame rate of 25 fps or 29.7 fps?
If so can I do this simply by loading the PAL template?

if you are in a PAL country, you should encode at 25fps.

No, 23.976fps is a valid framerate for VCD. It could be that you're DVD player doesn't like 23.976fps either.

If you use 3:2 pulldown on playback and your source is a 23.976fps file and your converting to SVCD, then yes your SVCD will playback great on your player. If you don't use 3:2 Pulldown on your 23.976fps file and your converting to SVCD, then most likely it will playback skipping and choppy.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P
