  1. Hi,
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm trying to convert a number of XVid films to DVD. I'm using VirtualDud to check for erros within the XVid then join the two parts into one film.

I then use TMPGEnc to convert the joined avi to MPEG for use in Ulead Workwork.

The problem I'm getting is when TMPGEnc has done it's work, the resulting mpeg plays a little jerky almost like a frame or two is missing every few seconds, i.e. it can play for 5 seconds no problem then a stop in video and carry on again after a split second, or it will play for 10 seconds and do the same etc. Though at no point is the sound affected or goes out of sync.

I've read the various guides for converting a to b but nothing seems to stop this jerking.

    Thanks in advance.

    wot framerate u converting to?

Try this (if u can be assed, more work...........):
1pen divx with virtualdub, save out sound as uncompressed wave then go to audio select no audio
2:Go to edit-end, write down length of movie include milliseconds
3: Go to video direct stream copy, then video framerate and convert framerate to your desired framerate (I use PAL 25fps)
4: Save out avi with new filename
5: Open new avi, note down its length
6: work out how much youve compressed movie, example:
movie segment at 23.976fps is 3496.298 seconds long
Now at 25fps it is 3353.120 seconds long
Therefore Compressed movie to 3353.120/3496.298 *100= 95.9049% of it's original length
7: open wave file with cooledit or goldweave etc and compress the wave file to 95.9049%. Save the new wave file
8: Open new avi with virtual dub, go to audio - wav select new wave file
9: check sync and frameserve or save new avi with direct stream copy on both audio and vid

If all done correctly you have avi with desired destination fps and sound still in sync, tmpg will not have to do a framerate conversion therefore no stuttering/duplication
you know it's the anti-Midas touch when all you touch goes to shit..............

  3. I've followd the instructions but alittle stuck on point 6. I must be thick but could you explain how to obtain to number of seconds, or is it a case of these numbers will never change? i.e. If I convert to 25fps like I have then it's always going to be 95.9049%?

    Thanks,
    Andy.

yes the figure 95.904% will be always be valid but only for converting from 23.976fps to 25fps. If your converting from or to a different framerate then your going to have to work out the new compression ratio. Now perhaps I was being very stupid earlier but to work out compression ratios then there is no need to work out lenghts in seconds (doh).

Going from 23.976fps to 25fps causes a compression in the movie of:

    (23.976fps/25fps)*100 = 95.904%

boy was I making a lot of work for myself (and you, sorry)!

So if your going from or to a different framerate other than what has been quoted so far then the compression will be:

(Original framerate divided by destination framerate) times by 100

  5. if this is a d/l movie of the web the film is nearly always NTSC running at 23.976 fps. if using TMPGenc to convert then ensure that 3:2 pulldown is selected in movie encode mode. if using wizard should be set auto. if not using wizard use unlock mcf to allow change of frame rate. this will solve your problem. always demux the wave file in virtual dub and use this not the original avi.

if you have already converted movie files and are left with an m2v file only run pulldown.exe to correct.

if your source is pal 25fps then pulldown is never needed.

if your creating a dvd file for burning to dvdr and don't want any menus or alternate audio streams better off using ifoedit.exe. creates everyting you want quickly and accurately.

    hope this helps
