Hi out there,
Being a newbie, I would like to know if there is anybody out there that
has tested different brands of DVD media ?
-or, am I safe as long as I chose a "well know" brand ??

From what I've experienced, you can go with a number of options:
Ritek
Optodisc
DVD Pro
Check out the link: http://www.supermediastore.com They have excellent prices on the different types of DVD media. (They've got their own brand called "supermedia" - stay away from it - made alot of coasters with them.)
You can also stick with the big names, but they're going to be anywhere from 3 to 5 times as expensive:
TDK
Sony
Imation
Verbatim
Pioneer
Mitsui

I love these and have nothing but success and still are very inexpensive.
100 spindle with shipping cost me $87. Thats 87 cents a disc and I have had the maxell 5 pack for $20 and they work just as well. I got these off ebay and you can sometimes find them as cheap as $66.

I've only tried Philips and Verbatim DVD+RW media and they work well...
