I guess you need a codec. But with this information I don't know which one.
Try to be more specific about the avi file so somebody can advise you about which codec to install.
Try to sort out which compression had been used. -
the file is Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (2of2).avi and i downloaded windows media MPEG 4 codec and it says A decompressor was downloaded for this file, but it didn't work. You may need to restart your player or browser. i did that and i have a this problem with every movie i download but if i try to download like a tv show or a music video it works fine and it is avi file also does anyone see the problem i can't figuor it out please please help

Download "The Nimo's Codec Package" as it comes with most of the video and audio codecs you need. I think it also comes with a subtitle decompressor also.
Hope That Helps!!!:P

I will explain your problem, which doing some reading would have accomplished for you.
An "AVI" file could be using any one of a dozen or more compression/decompression algorithms, known as codecs for short. There are at least 3 versions of DivX, four if you count Xvid. For any particular video, you need the appropriate codec installed. CAREFULLY READ the instructions for the Nimo pack, some of the programs it contains are not needed and some can cause problems.
