  1. I own a Sony Mavica CD400 camera that creates JPEG files. I need to view the files on the TV thru a DVD. Can you all tell me what's the best DVD for this purpose. Thanks to all in advance.

I had the same question in getting a Xmas present. My research turned up two(2) DVD players on the current market that would play JPEGs; GE DGE100N approx $80 and the JVC XV-S502SL approx $150. I checked reviews on both machines on several sites, including this one, and settled on the JVC. The GE, though quite a bit cheaper, had several very negitive reviews by people who had recently purchased it. Mechanical failures as well as features.
The only problem I've encountered todate has been the compatibilty issue ov VCDs burned with various off-the-shelf photo editing software packages. Some work some don't. If you chose the JVC stay away from any Pinnacle software. Also DVDPhotoplay had severe audio problems.

  3. Thanks for the advise. I went ahead and got the JVC, however, I can't see the images on TV. I don't know what's wrong. All of my files are 2272x1704, and this may have something to do with it, but I'm not sure. The DVD reads in the mini discs, but when I try to view the first image I get nothing. Let me mention that I have an old TV and got an RF Modulator connected to make it work. I can see video CDs, but not the JPEG mini discs. This has been very discouraging to say the least, but I don't know what to do next. One thing I came across reading the instructions was that JVC "RECOMMENDED" to use the 640x480 JPEGs, but no other information on this subject. If this is the case, then I will not able to view my 2272x1704 images on this machine.

  4. I think there's more than 2 players that do that. However, most people don't seem to really reasearch what they buy, and if they do, they look for VCD compatibility it seems. Most these players decode JPEGs really slow (limited processing power), I can't say about colors, aspect ratio or anything else for I have not tried.

I have a GE, and it's well built (3 DVD changer too) and it costed me less than the JVC. Fully hackable (no macrovision, loopholes menu, all the bells and whistles). It also played everything I threw at it so far.

You can also make VCDs with photos I guess (lots of posts on that lately), or use a PC for slideshow (with TV out), or some cameras do have a TV out connection on them. (My HTPC will display 'em fast, and with an optional soundtrack 8) )

My research consisted of visiting the various manufacturer's web sites and under their product lists searching, among other things, for JPEG compatibility. I also visited local audio/video retail stores and asked the same set of questions about ability to play JPEGs, VCDs, SVCDs, CD-R, CD-rw, etc.
This search was limited in time (wanted the DVD for a XMAS present) to about three(3) weeks, so I'm sure that I missed some available DVD players that would work.
I was first going to purchase the GE model but several negative comments from purchasers of this model from WalMart, Circuit City and other places caused me to steer away from it. Never know, might have been totally missled.
Last but not least, I'm a total newbee to this whole area of DVDs and CD-R/CD-RW burning. The whole package, DVD player, CD burner, and the PC software were put together from scratch, again as a XMAS present.
I learned to my dismay on XMAS day that not all of the pieces play together. I had purchased Pinnacle's Expression software to record the VCD photo albums of CD-R media prior to even opening the DVD player from its box, let alone installing it. This was done XMAS day and I found out that Pinnacle generated VCD/SVCD's don't work on the JVC XV-D502DL. JPEG's displayed fine, although the larger files, >1000x700 were extremely slow in loading as has been explained on other forums.
I then found and joined VCDEasy and began to explore whether to seek another DVD player or different software programs.
Enough of the background that led to my first reply to this post. I did notice that on a previous post of December 31st on this same topic the JVC model referred to was the XV-S500BK, which is different from the model I based my response upon
