nope.. you can author svcd's using one of the many free open source programs available, and burn it with MissingMediaBurner or cdrdaoGUI (both free). most everything you need to get started can be downloaded from this site:

there's good tutorials on there too.
you also might want to check out ffmpegx, vcd builder, and vcdtoolsx. you'd need qt pro if you want to do any editing of videos that arent in DV format though...
please let me know after you've created an svcd, if it works on your sampo dvd player. i have the sampo DVE-611, and i don't know if it's the model or the brand or what.. but i've never gotten any SVCD i created on my mac (burned in toast, or either of the 2 programs i mentioned above) to play in it. they will play in my boyfriend's dvd player though, so i'm not doing them wrong.
so yeah any feedback on the compatibility of your player would be greatly appreciated! thanks -

I have successfully burned miniDVD & XSVCD and played on my sampo
