I am getting ready to start putting all my 8mm movies on SVCD. I noticed my TMPG MPG2 support no longer works. Virtualdub does not capture from my Pinnacle PCTV card in XP due to lack of support for WDM drivers.

Is there ANY software that works with MPG2 for SVCD's that does nto timeout or is more affordable. I don't want to pay $50 for TMPG if all it does is convert files. Then another $$ for capturing, then another $$ for burning.

    Any suggestions?

PS I already own Nero with the VCD plugin...so that helps the burning $$ part.

  2. DVD2SVCD comes with support for a lot of free programs, but you must get TMPGEnc or CCE on your own. Once you have the programs, you set your settings, then hit "GO!". It can even make CD Images for you. I am a newbie myself, and I love this program. I would reccommend it to anyone.

I heard CCE is fast and has the best SVCD quality, so you might want to get that over TMPGEnc.

Honestly, tmpgenc is probably about the best value you'll find. A little slow, but easy to use and decent quality. I think bbmpeg can do MPEG-2 encoding for free, but quality is not as good as tmpgenc and I've heard that it's even slower.

Some burning software (like Nero) and consumer home-video editing software can encode direct to SVCD MPEG-2, but from what I've heard quality is similar or inferior to tmpgenc and they tend to cost the same or more anyway. The ones that cost less usually aren't much good as video editors, either.

CCE is fast and high-quality, but $2000 is a little steep for your average home user.

  4. This site seems to have deals for TMPGEnc Plus pretty often, maybe you could look into that

You could get one of Intervideo's PVR applications and cap directly to S/VCD, but I wouldn't recommend it for that purpose. For the same money you can get TMPGEnc, and honestly at $50 it is an insanely great deal for what it can do. BBMpeg gives poorer results, and I don't think its been updated in quite a while. Another option I don't recommend is the MPEG-2 plugin for Nero for about $25 I think.

TMPGEnc looks like the one I'm stuck with. I'm cheap and wanted another option but there don't seem to be any other options as good.

    Thanks for all your replies...

DVDx is a program that i use to encode DVD 2 SVCD, but you need to test a lite to get yourself in to what is good to have mutch off and the other why, i have not found i why to get good enouth quallity like the onece i download but clowse... Im ripping to DivX it's faster and fairly good quallity when you drop some quallity changes, but SVCD is charper then DivX so if your in to it go for SVCD.

BTW download DVDx not DVDxp4 it's bugy, i don't know if it is becouse i have p3... =P something you cold tell me if you have p4
