I have a Sony TRV740 and am trying to transfer the video to my laptop via firewire. To date I've just been playing the vid via firewire and capturing that as it plays using pinnacle or adobe and it saves to avi. i could see this being a problem as the laptop vid card isn't that great. i was wondering if/how there is a way to directly transfer the vid w/out playing it through my vid card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Your firewire port will only allow you to transfer your video from D8 camcorder to your PC. Your video card has nothing to do with the actual transfer process, other than for your viewing pleasure while the transfer is on-going, so don't worry about it. Yes, video quality on a laptop is not that good, but the AVI file that you have is basically 100% copy of what you had in your D8 tape.
Hope this helps.
