    According to AV Watch, Mitsubishi Electric announced the development of 200mW laser for 16x DVD±RW on December 24, sample shipment to start from June 2003 and mass production from 2004. The company has also plans for 140mW laser for 8x DVD±RW to start mass production from April 2003. The original press release from Mitsubishi can be found at the following links.

    A guy called radder at KBench.com forum translated the Japanese text into Korean which I have just finished reading to understand it better though I could write the first summary from the few Chinese characters I know there. Here I have added some more.

    Mitsubishi Electric has developed the world's first laser for 16x speed DVD±RW writing.

    For 16x DVD±RW, it will begin to write at 176Mbps taking 3.5 minutes to write a full 4.7GB DVD disk. First sample production of 16x laser will start from June, 2003.

    Required laser power for 1x DVD±RW: 50mW
    Required laser power for 2x DVD±RW: 70mW
    Required laser power for 4x DVD±RW: 100mW, shipping now
    Required laser power for 8x DVD±RW: 140mW, mass production to begin from April 2003
    Required laser power for 16x DVD±RW: 200mW, mass production to begin from 2004


    Monthly Production Capacity

    December 2002: 1 million units (including 0.7 millioon units of 4x laser)
    April 2003: 1.5 million units (including 8x laser, planned)
    2004: 2 million units (including 16x laser, planned)
