    It's a common term for the method used to convert a widescreen movie to a full-screen 4:3 TV aspect ratio. A lot of newer movies seem to be done the lazy way, they just crop out the sides. If you rent an older movie on VHS and watch carefully you'll notice some scenes where they either alternate or pan between two parts of what was probably a single scene in the original.
