This is a long one, but if anyone figures it out, you are god of all that is video and you will be praised by the DivX people of the underworld.
Man, I'm new at this, but I've tried pretty much everything I can think of, I've got DivX movies trying to go to SVCD.
Problem: playing SVCDs on DVD player, the picture and sound "jerk". they stop and start the whole time. If I play the disks on my PC with powerDVD, sometimes it seems to be OK, althouth I've tried so many settings and changed so many things, I'm not sure which ones work on PC anymore. sometimes on PC the sound would just be out of sync, but never choppy sound and/or picture like on my dvd player
I've tried virtualdub to separate audio, scan for errors etc.
I've tried different encoders - TMPGenc Plus 2.59 2.588..., Cinema Craft 2.5 full version, 2.62, Nero (just for the hell of it)
I've got every codec known to mankind
I've tried VCD with similar results
I've tried using the encoders standalone, I've tried using avi2svcd and frameserving and/or image creation and/or multplexing, etc. (tried all the settings.)
Tried using besweet, toolame. tried different offset options, etc.
I've followed almost every guide on this site for converting divx to svcd
I've tried EVERY setting in these programs like CBR, VBR, etc. etc.
I'm postive I'm using the correct frame rate settings.
I've also looked through this entire board before posting. (I hate to admit defeat and ask for help, but I'm just damn sick of it, and my wife is probably gonna divorce me)
I can play another guys vcds just fine on my dvd player, which is what is really pissing me off, cause I know it's something I'm doing wrong.
I think the next step would be to try something besides Nero, because it can't be the encoder, I've tried different encoders with the exact same results, it can't be virualdub cause I've left it out of the process and got the exact same results. It can't be the movie, because I've tried several different ones, even different framerates, divx versions, resolutions, etc.
I'm gonna try vcdeasy I guess, but I have to go by some more CDs, I've used all of mine up, tryin' all this crazy junk.
The only other thing I can think of is that my DVD player just doesn't support dvds and maybe I didn't use the standard settings when I tried a vcd, I think the standard is 1150? but I used constant quality mode in TMPGenc and set max to 1600. Not sure if that would matter since I used a vcd template.
Anyone have any suggestions?

If it is playing ok on the software player on your PC then it is most likely your DVD player. Look at the DVD player compatibility at the left side of the home page. Search for your model of Dvd player, and it should tell you what it can and can't do.

I would try playing your vcd/svcd's on other DVD players before you frustrate yourself more
......also, the bitrate can have an impact on performance, the standard for VCD is 1150 and if it is going over that, that may be what your player is having trouble with(did you try it at 1150 max just to be sure ?), also just to know what are the specs of the computer you run the VCD's on and what software player do you use to play them ?
Mainly, try as many other DVD players as you can with the VCD's and keep the bitrate at 1150, this way you can eliminate any out of spec problem and concentrate on one problem at a time.
Good luck -
I found this out also on a guide for CCE:
"Press the "Bitrate" tab and change the bitrate to 1150 kbps which is the standard bitrate for VCD. Make sure you select CBR because VCD uses a constant bitrate"
On this site,
http://www3.telus.net/dvd/mpeg/cce.htm
apparently VBR is not supported under VCD, at least not in the spec for it. This may be causing the issue....try CBR. -
Yeah, after I started thinking about it more, I figured it was my dvd player, I looked at the specs as suggested and here is what it says it can play:
Panasonic RV31 CDR
CDRW DVD-R
DVD-RW DVD+R
DVD+RW VCD
Subs
Tracks
CVD XVCD
2600kbit/s
MP3
384kbit/s
In the report, others say they can't do svcds.
I was wondering about the xvcd though, it says it does support that, anyone had any experience with 'em, is it worth my trouble?
I think the max bit rate settings on the one vcd I tried was too high as mentioned, Thanks for everyones help and let me know about the xvcds if you get a chance. -
Where is your video jerking? If it's in dark areas or when there is little or no motion it could be that your minimum bitrate is too low. If its in high motion areas then it could be your max bitrate is too high. Also in tmpg, under settings and source range it'll show above the video what it thinks the framerate is. I'm working on one and when I first encoded it my avi was 23.976fps but tmpg thought it was 30fps so it was doing a framerate conversion which'll make a jumpy picture. To fix this i frameserved with AVIsynth but you could also use VirtualDub, those both fixed my framerate problem.

A mate of mine has the same dvd player as your using, and he uses dvd2svcd to encode divx movies to svcd (same as i do). If your dvd player supports Xvcd then it should support svcd as you mentioned other svcds working on your dvdplayer? Maybe it could be the max bitrate your using, try using 2530 and for audio tick the 'Audio 1 downsample 48>441' box under the audio tab, it sounds as if your dvdplayer is having problems reading the video or audio data as a lot of dvd players dont support 48khz audio. Anyway i just thought id make a suggestion as I read through the forum, im not an expert but it may work
-
I did try those settings as you mentioned. before I mentioned other VCDs worked, but I've never tried anyone elses svcds.
I did get it to work with xvcd at a bitrate of 1600, I just tried this bitrate, I'm pretty sure it will work on higher rates too. It worked with no problem at all. I guess my player just does not support the svcd format, oh well, the higher bitrate xvcds look just as good to me.
It's weird your buddy can play svcds on the same player, maybe it's a slightly different model? -
Well, I found something that works even better, I am now able to play SVCDs on my DVD player using the header change trick.
http://www.vcdeasy.org/modules.php?name=_Guides&id=VcdTrick#vcdtrick
Tested it out by using tmpgenc and creating 30 sec. 2530 bit rate SVCD, then changed the header according to the above guide, burned in nero as non standard VCD and viola.
Thanks for everyone's help, I think I'm good to go.
